Re: Which Rookie Award Earns Them A Spot At The Championships ?

Thanks everyone.
Having not been a rookie team since 2004 I'm vague on how a rookie team can win the all-star award. Is there an application / submission process at the regional or is it like other awards, the judges walk around and quietly interview candidate teams. I suspect the latter.

In year's past, judges have decided this award similar to most other awards, via interaction with teams in their pit and observations around the venue. With the exception of district championship events, there has not been any special presentation. There has not been any additional applications or essays required, though having hand outs for the judges may be beneficial.

Nothing is known for certain until the manual is released, of course.

Re: Which Rookie Award Earns Them A Spot At The Championships ?

One thing to keep in mind, the Rookie All-Star Award is optional. So, if the judges do not feel as though there is a rookie team at the event deserving of the award, it does not have to be given out. I think this is something many people are unaware of.

The teams I have worked with that have won Rookie All-Star make sure to do community outreach and demonstrations. Some rookie teams even look into starting FLL or FTC teams in their middle or elementary schools. I like to think of it as a "starter" Chairman's. Feel free to private message me if you have any questions. (:

I know a number of Rookie All-Star teams who use the information provided for the Chairman's Award as the basis of their Rookie All-Star "application". They would write a Chairman's Essay based on the criteria and fill in all the executive summaries for their team, and then make copies or create scrap books that include the essay and summaries for the judges.

PS: As is the case for many other FIRST awards, remember that it's wise to think of the Rookie All-Star award as something you *earn*, not something you win.

Yes. Yes. Yes. And as stated above, the RAS is an optional award, as in it does not have to be given out if the judges feel there is nobody that adequately *earns* it.
