Windows 10

Hi Friends!

We are getting ready for kick off and building extra drive bases to my students can practice driving and hooking up the control systems. Does anyone have experience with using a windows 10 machine? I get the sense that some people have done this but, I am wondering if there are recommendations against this or if it seems fairly neutral?

Also, should i get the 2016 version or just go ahead and do the 2015 system since it's better documented and we are trying to hustle through this?

Thanks for your generous help!

Re: Windows 10

I don't know about Windows 10.

As your purpose seems to be bringing people up to speed quickly, I'd recommend using the 2015 software, as most of the problems are already known. You may want to put a couple of veterans on working through issues on the 2016 software, but the chances of a showstopper are too great, and the odds of updates before 9 January are too high to justify starting with 2016 setup. We're waiting until after kickoff to switch.

I run windows 10 and I never had any problems... its pretty neutral... just as long as you know if its a 64 or a 32 bit system

Re: Windows 10

Thanks for the input! I think we will probably go ahead and run with windows 10 and see how it does. It appears to be the lesser of two evils (vs. 8.1)! I just wanted to see if we had anyone try yet.

Also, that's a great idea on the 2016 software. It would be good for my veteran teams to start poking around.

Thanks,
Naomi

Re: Windows 10

You do realize the 2016 software is not available until kick off?
I have seen any issues from windows 10 in Java Beta testing. But our team is only a small cog in Beta testing.

Re: Windows 10

You should be able to use Win 10 with no additional problems next year. Several teams have been beta testing with Win 10 over the past several months with no significant issues.

I will say, however, that our team is staying with Win 7 for this year. We could not see any advantages to upgrading, only down-side risks. Some of the programmers will have Win 10 on personal laptops, so we will get to see how it goes before upgrading our primary operational and coding laptops.

Re: Windows 10

I COULD NOT install the 2015 FRC Update on my Windows 10 upgraded laptop! Beware. It completely failed. Stick with Win 7 or Win 8.1. Windows 10 has been a mess for me. First, the OS deleted my files in the Windows.old directory screwing up my registry and now I am picking through it with regedit to clean up the mess. I tried Recovery and Reset and it FAILED. I will probably be downgrading to Windows 7 64 bit and reinstalling everything.

Microsoft put out the OS before it was ready.

Well, like I said, somehow the Windows.old directory got decimated. It is still there, but 95% of the files and directories are gone. I am a programmer and know what I am doing. I am pretty sure that I didn't inadvertently delete that stuff, especially piecemeal. And then there is the issue of Windows 10 not being able to be downgraded if you wait till after a month. I got no warning of this when I upgraded. Did any of you get that information in the upgrade process?

Also, when I installed 10 apparently it tried to install my old apps but somehow screwed up the registry because when I try to update any of the apps that 10 installed I get the message "The file you are trying to access is on a network resource that is unavailable". Very strange.

Needless, I tried removing the 2015 update from Programs & Features with no success. Then I removed all references to it in the registry and tried to re-install it, all to no avail. I'll keep trying different things since you said you were successful. I'd rather not scuttle my install and have to re-install from scratch.

Anyhow, hope this is helpful to someone. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had similar trouble.

Your issues aren't with Windows 10 but with the upgrade tool. There are always risks with upgrading an OS and you should always make a backup before upgrading if important files are at risk.

Re: Windows 10

We upgraded our drive station to Windows 10 without much problems, but some of the libraries used in the 2015 toolkit wouldn't hook. Since installing the 2016 toolkits and software release, all problems are gone.
I think the upgrade system is what messes with the libraries, and just reinstalling the software and IDEs after upgrading to windows 10 would work.

Re: Windows 10

We did ran into a small issue where Edge did not worked well with some Silverlight stuff... Quickly installed Firefox and it worked like a charm.

Re: Windows 10

Silverlight is at its end of life. Microsoft doesn't recommend it for new development. Chrome doesn't support it. I have not played with Edge much. Since Edge is new with windows 10, it might not support it either. Firefox works no problem.
