NavX MXP. There's libraries that help with most of the basic upkeep of the IMU, it's really stable, you don't have to think about where or how you're mounting it, and there's a graphical interface/debugging thingy so you can see what you should be getting in your code.

Photogates won't do much for you aiming-wise, you'll need a camera for that.
Speaking of light sensors, 2 years ago a former programmer on the team used a photogate and a piece of retroreflective tape to detect rpms on a flywheel. I thought that was pretty clever. |
