I use windows simply b/c I'm too lazy to load anything else on this computer or even buy a Mac...
I've used Mac's before and I'm comfortable with them but they just aren't that common anymore...I grew up on an Apple actually...

As for Linux...I've used it once a while ago...but I haven't been exposed personally to that OS too much (I know Joe and Jim use it that its with people I know that use it....)

i've tried to learn some linux, and i've gotten pretty far (for me). i actually installed a couple of distros, settled (for now at least) on debian, got xwindows to work, got a bunch of programs i would use (web browsers and the such), and most importantly SAMBA. so now i have a pentium pro 200 Mhz computer running debian, with a 120 gig HD acting as a second file server on my home LAN. (yes, i did say second. the first one got full. 40 gigs just wasn't enough ). after i got that set up i kinda left it. it's been on almost non stop for a while now. never crashes, just keeps on going. my windows server (the first file sharing server) needs a reboot at least once a month, usually closer to once every week or two.

if i get some free time i'm going to dig up an old hard drive, or delete some stuff on my windows one, and install linux on my "play" computer. i want to see how it works on a slightly better computer .

Debian has a good PPC port.

Before I got myself a laptop, I was borrowing (no, I didn't steal it, they gave me permission) an iBook from my school. The first thing I did was install Debian on it. That was fun...

Someone write me a PBASIC IDE for Linux...

Probably next to nothing, which is exactly the audience that Apple goes for...

I can't resist

What's the best way to accelerate a mac?

9.8 meters/second/second

Haha, in all seriousness I actually like macs, but I won't get one because the college I'm going to go to next year requires me to get a PC Laptop. Oh, and contrary to popular misconception, I've heard that you CAN have a 3-button mouse for macs.

Mac OS X has to be the best operating system currently available. It runs on BSD 4.4 core and has the best looking GUI i've ever seen. Its more stable than windows, has great software support, looks better than windows, and most importantly.. ITS UNIX!!.
You also have to admit that those 23" cinema dispalys are pretty sexy..
My only complaint is the one button mouse.. but I can still use my intellimouse explorer.. So its all good.

at IUPUI (the university i am attending) we prolly have 250 + computers in our library. mac's make up about 50 of them, the rest of them are Dell P3's and P4's. The point of this is that I think it's hillarious when there are lots of spaces open for mac's and there are lines of people trying to get onto a PC. Maybe this means something....
At UCLA (where I'm going) there's computer labs in every res hall and tons other places and I don't believe I've seen a single Mac.

I have a kensington Studio Mouse with three buttons and an optical scroll wheel. So yes Macs can have more than one button mouse. It ships with only a one button mouse. There are several venders like Kensington, MacAlly, Microsoft, etc. that sell these multi-button mouse for about $20-$40. Mac OS X comes with native support for a multi-button mouse. Most pros on Macs don't even use the standard mouse.

Most colleges I have seen support both the Mac and Windows systems on their networks. With the newest release 10.2 Jagwire, you have a bunch of cool network features like rendezvous, VPN, networking w/ Windows and whole lot more. http://www.apple.com/macosx/technolo...etworking.html

On a side note, here is a editorial from David Courtsey from ZDNet, and some good info on macs:

Yeah ... even the college I'm going to go to does (VA Tech). More specifically, it's not the college that doesn't allow me to get a mac, it's the college of engineering. Other departments allow you to get one. Interestingly, the computer labs I saw when I visited had all macs (I went to the library, and I hear they have a math lab with all macs).

How the heck is a university going to know what OS/comuter you use? I have seen that when looking at colleges but don't quite understand why.

Ohh...
And USB is NOT my friend. Stupid HP Photosmart printer thinking it's so great with completely undocumented linux drivers that do absolutely NOTHING(#$&(#$& *fumes*
