Question CIM vs. Drill motor

I've noticed that a lot of the veteran teams are using the CIM motors. I am wondering why. I thought the drill motors were more powerful than the CIM motors. The relative mode I'm comparing is the low gear setting on the drill motor w/ clutch setup vs. the CIM motor w/o any gearing. Are the CIM prefered because they do better under autonomous contitions since they are stepper motors, or is it simply a matter of the CIM putting out more torque than the drill motors?

The power/speed isn't as big of a deal for many veteran teams. Many veterans have a transmission in their gearbox to make for high torque or high speed on demand.

The biggest advantages I've seen of using the CIM as opposed to the Drill? Heat & Mounting.

The CIM's don't heat up anywhere near as quickly as the drill's do. They also have mounting points built into the motor housing making a gearbox a relitivly simple task.

With the pre-made gearboxes for teams, I expect the majority of the rookies to be using the drill's with prefab boxes and the majority of veterans having their own gearbox with CIM

Our team ended up using the drill motors just because we found it easier for ourselves to mount them and also because the kit already came with couplers for the drill motors. We ended up machining those extra hex blocks that came with the kit so we could custom fit one of our shafts. You should see our drive train. We used timing chain and sprockets from a chevy 357 V8 engine. There's no way we're going to bust that

Here's a picture of last year's robot with the same drive train.
