MUST READ: Team Organization

Hello all teams,

I was wondering if there are any teams out there that are independent from a school. CA Robotics was set up as a local robotics group for students from any school, or no school at all. Are there any other teams set up this way, or in a similar way that is independent from a school? Even though it isn't required, I'm starting to think that people think being sponsored by a school is a requirement?!?

Thanks a lot for responding,
Jonathan

I can't think of one off hand but there are teams that are made up of a multitude of schools, church groups, or just groups.

having a high school sponsor is not a requirement, having high school level students isn't either. But they must be high-school or lower people. (i.e. K-12 if they were to be in a school). I can't remember what team number but an old gaming buddy of mine was on an all middle school FIRST team (not FLL, FIRST) down in Flowermound, TX

Our school district doesn't sponsor us or anything. The tech teachers like us so they spend their own time with us in the labs so we can work. However, we still say we're 'school-sponsored'. Otherwise, they'd forbid us from using the room.

We are in a similar situation... we currently cover 5 school districts, and are open to an additional 3 school districts. In addition we have home school students..... and work out of several locations.

I know team 68 does not have a school sponsor. They are solely supported through parents and General Motors. We had a school sponsor when I was on the team in both 10th and 11th grade, however the support of the school was just their name and us being able to travel. Since then the parents have become more involved and done away with a school sponsor. I believe the team this year has 9 or 10 different school districts involved however they allow any interested student to be a member of the team based on a multi leveled application process and a series of interviews. School support is nice however not needed.

I, being in the 8th grade, am living proof of the non-high-school element... We are understaffed and are having trouble with recruiting: This year's robot was basically built by three or four of us, with me doing all the wiring and programming...
