![]() Team 341 would like to welcome all hearing impaired FIRST team members, as well as any other members interested in learning sign language, to participate in our hearing-impaired network.
However- you do not have to know how to sign to participate. The whole purpose of this network is to increase awareness of deafness and bring together people with America's third most used language. And believe me- there are a whole lotta benefits you can gain from learning sign, not to mention its pretty cool.. We'll be handing out alphabetical sign charts at competitions and if you guys want to know any signs, just ask one of our team members.. go to http://team341.com/hinetwork.html to learn more about this network.. If any of you guys are interested in learning some signs, or being part of this, you can respond on this thread or send some emails to us.. ![]() |

I'll be working the Philly Regional, doing queuing.......and I know how to sign. I took a year of ASL my senior year of high school (it's one of the 10 foreign languages offered there). Some of the team knows sign also, and they'll be there (team 422, Maggie Walker Mech Techs). I'd be more than happy to participate!
btw, I like the ASL graphic you have in your post. |

I think this is great, is this something new your team started, or have you had this for a while? Are there members on your team who have hearing loss?
I will be at J&J and the CE this year.... I don't know if your team is planning on attending CE, but I would love to be involved. I have Menieres Disease, and suffer from extreme hearing loss in my left ear, and recent subtle loss in my right ear. Our driver team definitely has experience dealing with such things... my driving partner also suffers from deafness in one ear due to a different complication. Best wishes to you and your team this year.... |

yeah, it's really neat to have people gathering in the pit and you sit and chat in sign language. If you are interested, seriously, come find 341. Even if that member doesn't know sign, they'll direct you to someone who does.
Oneangrydaisy~ much though I'd love to believe that sign language will be added to the curriculum, I think the budget cuts (cutting Latin, oversized classes so that they don't need to hire new teachers/pay them overtime, etc) will make it unlikely. We can hope, though, and until then, you guys make awesome teachers! |

Re: Hearing-Impaired Network
Sorta bringing back a really dead topic, but I just joined the forums so I have an excuse!
![]() Anyways, I am hard-of-hearing, with a moderate loss in both ears. Unfortantly I don't sign, since I have been in main-stream schools pretty much all my life. But I have been picking up some since I hang out with a "Deaf-Teen Club" around where I live (St. Louis).... Well, I am going to be in the St. Louis regionals, dunno about any other places though.... Hope to see some of you there! |

Re: Hearing-Impaired Network
This is wickid cool. I am about 50% hearing impaired in both ears and in FIRST for four years now. I started to learn to sign as a kid, but only during my free time. My intrest in learning it kinda stoped in the 6th grade because I had a hard enough time just learning how to talk right. Now that I am older I would love to learn to sign, it would be awsome.
