Are we allowed to have more than the 2 Clippard Instruments tanks? Also, are we allowed to order larger thanks?

Q1) If the parts list shows 2 being shipped to you, than two are the most you can have on your robot.
Q2) Unless there are any in the Small Parts catalog or on the Additional Hardware list, than you can't order any other sizes. Wayne Doenges |

I heard some teams last year ordering the largest piston they could, and cutting the stoke off, to use as a large tank. I don't know how practical it is, try searching the old forums about it.

Extra air at a price
You can also use an extra cylinder as a storage tank. Many teams did this last year. However, there is a price:
First, it means one less actuator. A cyclinder used in this way must be mounted in such a way that the piston does nothing at all. Preferably you use the retract side of the cylinder as your reservoir. That way the piston wants to stay in. But if you have the space and need the volume you may have the piston fully extended. Second the piston adds weight and potentially removes volume, though not very much. Of course, if you do this you want to get the biggest cylinders on the list. Remember that you are not allowed to modify the cylinders in any way. So don't even think about cutting off the piston rod. |

I had an idea last year and it basically went like this
if you had small actuators and could afford the air being a lil slow through the regulator and needed more volume at 120 then you could use a coil of the penumatic hose set up with 2 tees so that the air could flow straght to the regulator without having to go though the long loop of hose but the hose would give extra volume, basically cut into your supply line, put a tee on each end, then connect your loop to the tees then connect a small maby 2" peice of line between the other output of the tee.. if your interested here is a very crude drawing. |

i wish that the pumps we have did have a pressure input on them... if it did then we could bleed the pressure from an extended but retracting cylinder back into the pump to make its work easyer. kinda like a closed system.. but I can see problems with it too..
you would need a popoff valve on the return pressure side to prevent the return and the supply from equalizing and freezing the cylenders untill the compressor could lower the pressure in the return side. but its all a moot point cause the compressor doesent have that input, and we cant make a fitting for it to have... tho another interesting idea is to use exuasted cylender air to cool your motors.. I mean it was cooled when it expanded from the cylender and its going to waist if you dont do somthing with it.. ohwell.. just a few thoughts.. take them as you will |

Curious... why would you want more than two tanks worth of volume? I suppose if you triggered large pneumatics repeatedly you might run into trouble... but... why else?

Umm...
You're absolutely limited to reservoirs you get in the kit? Can you not use something like steel conduit for storage purposes? |

More storage is always good!
If you hang your hat on pneumatics, then you want all the reserve power you can get. The compressor is heavy, and if you can get enough storage on the 'bot to get away with out having that compressor mounted, then all the better. That much less weight, volume and power use you need to worry about. So, outside of having lots of air to use, you might be able to drop the compressor altogether. -Andy A. |
