Go to Post I bet a lot of us (mentors and students) got into this line of work first because we wondered how things work, and stayed in it because we thought "I can make that work better". Thus starts a life-long battle between perfection and time. So far, time is ahead. - petek [more]

Arrow Moving MP3s to New Computer

Ok, so I'm not a very good network kinda of person so I thought I would post here to see what the best way to transfer my MP3s from my old computer to this new laptop I'm using now. I tried downloading some firewire network program that didnt work at all and I hear that using a cat5 cable (is that right?) between the two is a good method. If this is the best method, do I also need to use an internet connection or just the cable.

Please Help

Networking with a crossover cable
Timmy in Mobile, Alabama, wants to know if he can make a direct connection between his laptop and desktop computer so he can transfer files. He's using Windows XP.

You can use an Ethernet crossover cable. If you use this cable, you won't have to use a hub. You need Ethernet cards in both computers, and you connect the two computers using the cable.

To set up Windows XP, you need to set up a network connection. Make sure you use NetBIOS, or you may not be able to see the computers. You also need to share the folders that you want to be seen by each computer.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...et/default.asp

The information's out there.

"borrow" an iPod (i'm pretty sure kyle has one, no?), download all the music to there, then put it into the laptop, copy files onto laptop.

done, at no extra expense.

if you don't have an iPod (or similar device), then you do need a crossover cable, which is usually sold at computer stores (at very high prices, but it's sold there).

What other reason would Kyle buy an iPod besides for you to use and claim as your own?

Do you have a hub clark? Maybe im just dumb, but this is what I do: save all music into the my shared folder, or just share the C drive, then go on the laptop and copy it all to it.

Yessssssssssss.....We have an iPOD, the problem is that all the songs are in the wrong folders on the iPOD. My brother put them the way he wanted them, not the way I need them this summer for IRI.

Thanks Jim. I'll look into your suggestions.

/me smacks Kyle

Where would your iPOD be if I didn't download all the music for it! HA!

Oh well, the iPOD is a bad idea, my brother tried it on his laptop and it seperated them into 20 folders or something name f1-f20 something or other, each folder containing a certain amount of songs...weird....

Oh well. I'll try the crossover cable idea.

Isn't it odd how when you have a twin, something you completely buy on your own, your twin thinks is just as much theirs? My twin brother does that to me constantly, it gets annoying. They are always around you too, at least mine is...

Crossover Cable

Crossover cables are just plain cool! Got one where I work (Circuit City), and only paid $1.60 for it (store discount). Even works well for LAN games.

Well, there's plenty of online tutorials on how to make your own crossover cable... it's fun and much cheaper. Google it.

or you can do something even cheaper. you get like 3 cds together and you put all your mp3's there and copy the cds to ure hd using WMP9 (Windows Media Player 9). no money to spend at all and if you want you can use the cds in ure car system. so it all works out.

if your use an apple type system the same method should be the same
