Question Video's On Geocities

I was wondering if any one knew how to post a video on a geocities website. I just don't know how to upload it using yahoo pagebuilder. I have the videos saved as .WMV, but if necessary I can convert to an .AVI or any other format. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Doesn't Geocities only allow so much space and bandwidth? Unless it is a very low quality video, I doubt you are going to be able to get it up there =(

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, it has been about 7 years since I played with a Geocities account, lol

yeah, geocities is crappy with bandwidth usage. you'll have lots of problems with that. try to find an external host for videos.

Plus, Geocities really doesn't take well to external linking of files. If you're planning to access this video from any external site, like these forums, Geocities is not a good option.

My site has 10 megs, and I just need to host a 1 meg video. If geocities is not a good place to do so, can anyone reccomend a better place.

Thanks.

First, a disclaimer: I'm not really familiar with geocities or Yahoo Page builder. But on searching their site, I found this page. It describes how to upload the file using FTP (is this is where your problem was?). .WMV didn't appear on their supported file extension list, but .AVI does indeed appear there. From there, I found this page allowing you to add custom HTML. If you need a refresher on this, try this page. That should allow you to do what you need (if a round-a-bout solution).

Try searching for free web hosting if you are interested in another provider than geocities (which I admit I don't like myself). I've used NetFirms before (though it has changed somewhat since then). I haven't really researched the various options available recently (the info I have is outdated probably) ... but other people on here have; I'm sure they'll tell you what they've used and what they've found successful. It all really depends on what your needs are. If you are just looking for a simple site, nothing fancy, maybe a few visitors every month or so, then geocities may be fine for you.

You may be able to upload some video to geocities. Keep in mind, however, that geocities has freakish bandwidth limitations imposed upon its users.. so, perhaps 10 people will download the video (or even less) and the page will then turn into a geocities default indicating to the visitor, "this site has exceeded its allocated bandwidth for x period of time." May not be a big deal to you, but it could become annoying.

(...just to re echo what everyone else is saying...)

the best free hosting ive found

This is a place i found and do use. Its http://www.hostultra.com/ and its free with loads of features and lots of bandwith. And since ur on geocities, you probably dont have a domain, for totally free domains check out http://www.dot.tk and pick up ur free .tk domain.

http://www.dot.tk doesn't exactly appear to be a solution for "totally free domains." I remember checking this out before, and on their website it clearly says:
Quote:
In order to use your FREEDOMAIN.TK you need to have an existing web page, website or homepage somewhere on the Internet. ... Every Internet user who surfs to your Dot TK address will automatically be directed to the website address you have registered. You can change your website address any time to redirect your users to a different website or web page. [emphasis mine]
It does give you a domain NAME; but this only redirects the user to the page you already have, it appears. And when I tried to register a domain to see what would happen, I just got 'The page cannot be displayed' errors (using IE)/connection closed by remote server (using Opera).

On their site it says it is a solution for people that don't want to enter the long URLs that sites like geocities have ... but it still doesn't get around the fact that geocities is hosting the space. Also, this message seems somewhat bad in the case that it is just for a small, occasionally visited site:

Quote:
Domain names that are not used in a 90-day period by at least 25 homepage visitors will be cancelled and made available to other registrants
[emphasis again mine]

Well hmmm.... Thats what a Domain is- a redirector (or Tinyurl, no-ip)
And If its not used for a 90 day period then what is the point in having it?
oh- and hostultra is good for personal webpages but for storing files its a rip, i stored a couple mp3's and in the middle of transfer they pulled the account saying i was using it for illicit purposes

This site, will not work for videos, they do not allow any audio or video.

"In addition to the above, User shall not upload onto their hostultra web space any of the following:
audio or video files of any type this includes but is not limited to .wma .wmv .wav .mp3 .avi .mpg .asf .mov (however flash and midi files are allowed)"

Thanks Again Everyone. I did get the geocities to work, as a temporary solution. I am gettting some webspace from my ISP as a way to host the videos.

Greg... try www.web1000.com - they give 50MB for free, with no ads, and they allow off-site linking (including videos).
