I am not sure whether you would call it a disability, but I am legally blind, not blind but legally blind. I have to sit in the front, center seat in classrooms and I have glasses that are so big and thick that everyone laughs at how big my eyes look when I wear them. Also, I will never be able to drive or play sports on a team. Everyone says that it must suck but I don't think of it that way. I am just glad that I am not completely blind.

I'll try to keep descriptions simple without confusion. I do not have a learning disability, however, I get tired easily... and it takes me longer to complete my work due to this.

I have spent almost one year with only appx. 80% hearing in one ear, and none in the other. However, it is even more interesting when some of the nerves in my ear 'overact' and I can not speak either. (The worst time for it to hit was at the Championship, with no one to be able to communicate with me, and trying to strategize and discuss possible alliances.)

To make things even more difficult, I was recently diagnosed with a rare Autoimmune Disease. Taking it day by day, and hope to get everything under control prior to next build season as a college mentor.

To all of you, and especially those of you still in high school - do not give up on FIRST, if anything, FIRST will be your safe haven, and you will find the most people to lean on.

The school says I have a disability because I can't see the board in classrooms. I have to have everything written down for me. I am disabled from doing certain things like driving so I am disabled. Also, my computer has a 21 inch monitor with everything enlarged. I still have trouble reading some things.

I know a few people who are legally blind. They can see normally with their coke bottle glasses, but if you take them away ( i swear to god I haven't done that . . . . ) they can't recognize more than a human sihlouette. Thats pretty disabled, although perhaps more easily overcome than being dislexic, although I wouldn't know either firsthand.

Well actually, I'm not as bad as most people who are legally blind. Normal aquity is 20/20. Anything that is 20/200 or worse is legally blind. I have 20/200 in one eye and 20/300 in the other. With my glasses, I can get up to 20/100 in one eye and 20/200 in the other. I can only wear my glasses for a few minutes at a time, otherwise I will get the biggest head ache since they are so strong.

My dad let me drive his van on some almost empty roads near where I live. I did pretty good except when I was using the turn signals, I kept turning on the windshield wipers. I could see just well enough to see the lines in the road. He wants to take me to get my perment, even though there is almost no chance of me getting it.

---
p.s. I may not be on CD again for the next week or two.

Time to come clean, ADHD is at work here.

Why else do you think I miss-spell all those words?

ADD

I have a question. Has anyone "outgrown" ADD? Like, have you been diagnosed, been taking meds, and then as you've gotten older found that with using reminder methods and improved organizational skills, found that you can go without meds?

if so, did you have any side effects? has this happened and after a while you decided to go back on meds?

thanks for your info and any opinions.

if for confidential reasons you'd like to respond off line my email is bonniel@clemson.edu or my sn on aol is bjl75

PS i'd love to hear from any parent's perspective on this issue!
thanks

I've just been diagnosed with it, so I don't know, but from what I know, you never out-grow ADHD (new technical name), but through reminders, organization, and other things, you can over come it instead of using medication.

ADHD in the house!!

Yeah I got that too... Was diagnosed since I was oh I don't know, prolly 6 yrs old..

As for side effects of medications, Yeah there are some!! I took Riddlin (EVIL) for many years and that stunted my growth.. That's why I am so short!! Boo Hoo!!!

I took other things as well with I guess some positive effect, but I never noticed it!!

As for outgrowing it, Nah.. It'll never happen!!

A little side note about ADD and ADHD.. I talked to a doctor years ago and he said that the best treatment out there for it is actually methamphetamine or crystal meth, but pharmacies refuse to carry it because of the security risks with the street value of such drug and the potential of the pharmacies getting robbed of the stuff....

Abuse and misuse of prescription medication for ADD/ADHD is actually fairly common, in and of itself. Ritalin, Adderall, Wellbutrin, and speed are some of the most commonly abused drugs in America.

However, it's not limited to amphetamines. Ephedra / Ephedrine (Sudaphed), caffeine, and many other substanes are used to combat ADD/ADHD.

Some more information about random stuff I just found (I take no responsibility for the content of the webpages at the end of these links. Be wary, they may contain "adult content," whatever that means):
ADHD
Treatment options for Attention Deficit Disorder
Amphetamine addiction as a cure for ADHD
Natural remedies for ADHD
and finally...
You can't buy Sudafed and Vick's VapoRub at the same time at Costco
