I'm going to withhold judgement for the time being, but I know that I'll be thrilled if the US manages to carry this through to completion.

By 2030, there will be a whole generation of FIRST students out in the real world...I wonder how many of them will work on this project?

Ive always thought that we could send people to Mars next year, if they were willing to take a one way trip. Its not so hard to get there, its landing a whole ship that can take off again and return to earth that makes it soooooo expensive and difficult.

I mean, think about it - the people who came to north america from europe on the Mayflower and the other early settlers - they had no intention of going back - it was do or die.

Im sure we could keep sending them supplies on a regular basis, and they could take their best shot at establishing a colony

and if they dont survive more than a year or so, they will still be THE MOST FAMOUS people in the human race - first human to set foot on another planet.

People have given up their lives for FAR less than that!

This is fantastic! Our generation of Engineers are basically GARANTEED jobs right out of college (and from somebody who experienced first-hand the effects of the crappy economy, that says a lot).

In addition, there will be many more internships and coop opportunities all over the country. Every Aerospace company will be positively affected, so just try to 'get an in' with one that is close to you.

I was always one of those kids who wanted to be an astronaut, but although many of us are encouraged to 'be what we want to be,' we are also told that doing something like that is a one in a million chance and that we should plan a more realistic career path for ourselves.

But of course, I tend to wonder what life would be like if I didn't at least TRY to achieve that altimate goal. For right now, i'm going to keep grades the highest I can, aim for a coop at JSC or JPL for next year (although DEKA is wicked awsome and going well), and start thinking of what relevant topic I may want to get a Masters degree in.

Are any of you going to do anything about this news?

Does seriously reconsidering becoming an aerospace engineer count?

I've been thinking about going into engineering or physics for a while now...knowing that I could have the chance to be involved in this makes it all the more tempting.

I was a kid during mercury gemini and apollo - I so much wanted to be the first man on the moon that I was actually a little dissapointed when Neil and Buzz landed (I was only 12 at the time though)

the space program was a BIG thing for all of us back then. My teacher even noticed that I wanted to be an astronaut, cause she told my parents that all I wanna do in school is take up space!
