Re: IRC related chatting
I used to get on IRC long ago, but then because of security issues, I stopped going on IRC servers. Yes, Its a lot fun to talk on there, unless its filled with a bunch of drowsy heads, which is rare.

Re: IRC related chatting
nah no more security probs m8... its becomming better and better... still the occassional ping attack on the networks just not on accual ppl... because most all irc servers now require hostmasking which hides users hostmask + ip sooo them nasty dDoS jerks cant get ya
![]() i have been ping attacked because of IRC though... it sucks ![]() if you'd like to chat sometime ill give u a link to a nice small network ill chat with anybody i dont care (about FIRST; etc, etc.) |

Re: IRC related chatting
Yeah, Please do..
I have programmed tons of IRC bots, and I know one thing for certain, no matter how good an IRC serverz security be, its the easiest way to grab IPs. But Yes, You are right, security gets better everyday. ![]() |

Re: IRC related chatting
Remember when MSN had free chat service. I believe it had a tough IP masking system. There were kids who managed to kick the Admins off, because they had Fibre Optics, which was more than what the Admins could handle. IRC Scripting is simple, and it gets more stable everyday
. The wonder of IRC Programming lies in looping structures. And so does it in Autonomous mode(some cases). |

Re: IRC related chatting
hmm alot more secure these days with hostmasking on connect
only people that can see your real hosts are admins/ircops (and its becomming harder and harder to crack oper lines) that is if the server is setup correctly with encryption and better control over what hosts are allowed to oper... theres only a few ways to really get a users ip ive never done this but i assume u can by using a packet sniffer and telling/getting them to send you a file via dcc which should spit out what ip they are on, that is unless the ircd acts as a go between, but i dont know for 100% the real enemy is common normal users, so if u think of it that way, if theres good admins, and a good server setup u are perty safe, but still watch who u mess with if u dont want to get ping attacked by a 12yr old who doesnt linux, and gets offened when u say its better then windows.... (true story...) lol! |

Re: IRC related chatting
lol.. Its not the 20 yr oldz and the 15yr oldz, its the 12 yr oldz. NO offence to those 12 yr. oldz here, but those are the kids who just know the minimum, and use that to attack servers online. YEAH, windows is the worst operating system you want to get attacked upon. IP masking has become old, its just that it gets better. The thing is, you can make your IP appear different to the Admins too. Therefore, with your wrong IP being displayed, it makes no effect if they ban you. And then it becomes easy to play around. Fortunately, there are IRC Filters, rare though, but they can stop almost anything.

Re: IRC related chatting
Microsoft doesn't control 97% of the Market. At the department of Linguistics, we have 6 Windows machines, 25 Solaris machines, and around 20 Linux desktops. Not to mention that we have *no* Windows servers. I'm hoping to get a new job at the Math department at OSU. They have some 80 OSX machines, 60 solaris machines, 30 Linux desktops, all Linux servers, and 2 Windows machines. The network support staff at Math doesn't support Windows. On team 677, I have to use my xbox running the compiler for first under wine on Linux because it's the only x86 piece of hardware our team has. Everyone has apple powerbooks or ibooks.

Re: IRC related chatting
I hang out on DALnet in #antidccallow, #scripts-are-us, #linux (sometimes), #linuxusers, #html, #php, #macintosh, and sometimes #windows95. I can also sometimes be found on Freenode in #linuxusers or #xlnx. Sometimes on tigerbolt, too. I'm the only person I've ever seen use 'evulish' as a nick.. so if you see that nick, it's probably me
(that also goes for probably a dozen other forums on the web) |
