umm.. heat sinks. sorry, we're roookies.....

i've looked around and saw a lot about heat sinks but not much about how to mount(stick? clasp?) them to a motor. zip ties, super glue, bolting um on? all i know is that they should be smack against the metal right? like metal against metal.
does it even matter what we use to mount it?
is glue a bad idea? (i'd think hot glue is a bad idea because of its low melting temp)
how about tape? the athletic taping tape? whatever you call it. the ones that stretch but let air through.
