COM ports can be changed.

Here's how for win2k/xp users:
1. Navigate to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System
2. Select Hardware tab
3. Click on Device Manager
4. Expand 'Ports (COM & LPT)'
5. Right click on your converter/connection device
6. Select Properties
7. Select Port Settings tab
8. Click on Advanced
9. Change COM Port Number to whichever port you wish to use
