Actually according to the FIRST database there are 1014. 935 of those are from the USA.

Re: Strange FIRST Facts

Has anyone else noticed the several of the schools that hosted FIRST Regionals are in the NCAA Basketball Tournament? Ex. VCU, UCF, etc.

That page you linked is the database from all teams that competed in the 2003 and/or the 2004 competitions combined. If you look HERE (FIRST 2004 Database) you will see only 930 teams are competing this year.

There has yet to be a year where over 999 teams total competed, look for it in our near future.

Oops.. It seems the interactive map on the FIRST site, still references 2003, not 2004. I just assumed that their query was correct...

What I'm trying to say is that a team that's had 5 years to work on beefing up their Chairman's Award resusme will probably have more examples as to why they deserve the award instead of a rookie or 2-3 year team who is still trying to get a feel for all that FIRST is. It'd be great to see a team with a high team number win to show that new teams can instantaneously transform their high school, town, county, etc. The odds are against them but a dedicated team can take the task head on and win the Chairman's Award. As the years progress I'm sure we'll see several teams over the 200 mark. It's only a matter of time.
It's been 12 years. You would think at least a team in the 3,4 or 5 hundreds that have been around for years would have won. I just think it's a quirky coincidnence than preferring long standing teams (remeber, 250 is an original team).

Regional or national chairman's awards. Im leaning towards national though because 564 won a regional award.

Well, the X-Cats won the very first Chairman's award, which technically makes them the only rookie to ever win the Chairman's award (though the teams back in '92 were pioneers, not rookies). There were no regoinal Chairman's awards til last year I believe.
