Re: pic: FIRST in CT

I like how CT has most of the 170 series numbers......173, 175, 176, 177, and 178. There are more teams here in CT than I previously thought.
Now if we could get another team up near Norfolk or Colebrook we could have the northwest corner taken care of. The problem is these towns have more farm animals than people!

As was explained to me, in times long ago in FIRST, the teams were numbered by their main sponsor in alphabetical order.

All those #170 something teams that you mentioned have UTC as a sponsor.

Juust like almost all of the #40 something teams have (had) Delphi as a sponsor.

There's a bit of FIRST history for you!

Team 716 is Region 1, basically the northwest corner from Canaan to Kent. Norfolk and Colebrook are in Region 7 with New Hartford and Barkhamsted. I have been talking to different schools and Gilbert (Winsted) and Litchfield are interested in starting teams. Not much industry up here so fundraising is full time!

It helps when FIRST was founded in New England and that CT has one of the highest population densities in the country (I think)

Yeah 1071 is like almost like 173, we cover mostly (like 98% of team) from wolcott HS but has kids from Kaynor Tech (waterbury) and Bristol TEC (Bristol)too.. Team 228 I think has like 3 or 4 schools part of them too.

We had kids from Kaynor Tech on the team for a while there as well, till our dumb school board said that we could not have students on the team from other schools - totally going against the beliefs of FIRST and our team for the expansion of exposure to FIRST and thus science and technology. :sigh:
The Kaynor Tech students (now grads) still stop by once in a while and help out where they can.

Just think how RAGE (or other multiple school based teams) would look like if their school's administration was as closed minded as ours.

RAGE is CONSTANTLY apprising our primary school boards of our accomplishments and coming before the school board meetings several times a year so they are aware of what a great program FIRST is. The school and town administrators of all our 5 high schools receive frequent e-mails and monthly newsletters from us. We encourage them to visit our practice facility and be sure to point out that our primary strength is in our diversity and ability to be teammates on the FIRST playing field, while being rivals on the sports fields. We are able to have a practice facility in East Hartford and our "build" and CNC facility reside in Rockville, with students traveling to each. We recognize that we are fortunate to have this arrangement and work hard to keep it going.

Yeah actually 237 is how I got into robotics. We did a reasearch project at Kaynor Tech on the Web, then I found Utitec does/did sposnor you guys (I work for them).. We had a small group of like 4 kids who we're interested in team 237 (all out of town students), but your board of education made the decison that we couldn't join (unless Kaynor paid some of the insurance, and that's just not realistic out of our school, we can't even afford to keep all our best and highest paid teachers). The Kaynor students who were interested do understand that the decison was made by above your advisors and it's not directly your team's call.

Re: pic: FIRST in CT

For some reason, this image is not displaying properly...its the only image i've ever seen malfunction on this computer...
(All i get is red x in white circle)

EDIT: I got it to work, and it looks great! I really don't have a very good mental map of CT,so I got to see where some of these people I talk to actually come from. Also, what Elgin said about the teams being alphabetically ordered by sponsor was correct, but I'll add a bit. Only the first 191 teams are done like this. Team numbers were randomly assigned until the 1998 season when the teams were given static numbers based on sponsor alphabetically. Team one had a sponsor of 3D systems, and 191 had/has Xerox. Based on our website, their were random team numbers for one year, in 97. Ours was 59. One day I was walking through the shop when I see this monocaulk (spelling) arm in the corner, which has a big 59 on it. I'm not sure as to why it was there. After that, they assigned team numbers randomly (except perhaps by date of joining the program.
