The College Football 2004 Thread

So, given that the NCAA Division 1 football season got off to its start today, I figured it's time to start a thread on college football again. So.... having seen one week's worth of games... what do you think? See any great games? Have any foolproof predictions? Let's hear what everyone has to say!

I, myself, was at the Michigan-Miami(Ohio) game today. My Wolverines got off to a bit of a slow start, but had the game well in hand by the middle of the 3rd quarter. I'm excited for this season... we've got a good team, including 3 of the best receivers in the NCAA. The quarterback situation seemed uncertain, but seeing our backup, Henne, start his first game as a freshman and pull off a win is reassuring.

Now, anyone else care to jump in or add something of their own?

Gonna Hijack for a min - Jeff - Did you go out in the stands today? I was out there doing concessons for my robotics team and saw them floating out n' about. I didn't see you (but I was only out there in 5-10 minute increments).

[/hijack]

I think U of M took a little longer to get their 'feet wet' but as soon as they did they turned it on and tore up the game.

Their defence looked killer!

Re: The College Football 2004 Thread

Cal is underrated, even with their #15 ranking (As much as I hate to admit it)

the PAC-10 will suck with the exception of $C, Cal, OU, and OSU.

Jason White will not repeat as Heisman winner.

U$C should be very worried about their offensive line and wide receivers at this point. Lots of unopen receivers and no pass protection vs. VT.

Im gonna say OSU beats LSU tonight and ruins their #3 ranking.

And Stanford is still the best :-D

Woohoo! We Are ... Penn State!!! :roar:

48-10 over Akron... yes, I know it's only week one, however, after last year we can only hope that the excellent showing and the power within Zack Mills will only continue onward.

I think they're an excellent team and will do great.
I'm ticked they got a new coach, but meh. Life goes on.

Re: The College Football 2004 Thread

Watch out for West Virgina-theyve been building a solid team over the past few years-and now have an easy Big East Championship since BC and Miami have left. Their Defense is made up of mostly former Blue Chip prospects.

And the Heisman will come from the PAC-10.

No real solid candidates past Reggie Bush after the first week-he is a solid threat rushing and also a threat through the air-id say a poor-mans Ladanian Tomlinson.

Re: The College Football 2004 Thread

Today I watched the USC (South Carolina to the rest of you)-Vanderbilt game. I wasn't too worried--it is Vanderbilt football--although there were a few goofs. It'll take a few games to get the new staff working perfectly (coach Lou Holtz fired three assistant coaches, and one quit...not to mention he took over the offense from son Skip), but I think they'll be ready by the Georgia game next week. (Which, by the way, I have a ticket for. Fwahaahaa.)

His stats are comparable to Tomlinson's as a freshman and sophomore, despite Bush sharing the RB duties.

Im thinking this year is gonna be good-no real dominant teams-like u saw in the LSU OSU game-every team will start to have a chance. I also think for that same reason no team will go undefeated.

LSU's field was soggy as all hell, negating their rather significant speed advantage they would have had over OSU

Re: The College Football 2004 Thread

U of M's special teams were starting to worry me at first, both their kick and receive teams.. For kick, Miami was gaining too much yardage because the Wolverines didn't stay in their "lanes" to contain while charging.. And for receive, U of M wasn't getting as much yardage as they could have.. As the commentator said, "It's gonna be an interesting special teams meeting." LOL but then again who am I to judge

But overall, they did awesome, especially Braylon and Henne, I'm looking forward to this season.. GO BLUE!

Re: The College Football 2004 Thread

Heisman leaders after week one:
Kay-Jay Harris-RB-West Virginia
337 yards on 25 carries-13.5 yards per carry
4 TD's-equalled his last season's total
Scored on 2, 5, 51, and 76 yard runs

Cedric Benson-RB-Texas
also gets a mention for his 181 yard, 2 td, performance
Texas ran for 513 yards in the game, if he had been the number one back, then he would be first.

J.J. Arrington-RB-Cal
181 yards and 3 tds.
Cal had 4 other rushing TD's which took away from his total.

Ummm... You can't really have a Heisman leader after week one.

Of all the players you listed on there, probably the only one to actually get any votes will be Cedric Benson. Arrington won't repeat performances like that very often, if at all in the PAC-10 games. Harris played Temple, who is absolutely miserable.

The Heisman leaders are still gonna be Jason White, Darren Sproles, Matt Leinhart, etc.

Re: The College Football 2004 Thread

O ya i know that-im just saying after week one-they are the best performers, i knew someone was gonna say that you cant look at the heisman after week one-shouldve said best of the week.

I do think Harris will have a great season though and be some may look at him as a possible pick, but ultimately wont win it. He will probably end up with Big East player of the year.
