Re: Canadian Segway Driver Fined $8000
That really stinks for him. I mean, p=mv. he could probably do more property damage by running into a glass window than by riding on a segway. Maybe it was to protect him from super fast drivers who jump off the Niagra Bridge
. Just Kidding. |

Re: Canadian Segway Driver Fined $8000
As quoted in the article:
"The outcome may help answer the question of exactly how to classify the Segway when it is introduced into Canada on a larger scale." "But sales have not taken off, partly because of the confusion about where they should drive – on sidewalks or roads. Late last month, New York City officials began meeting to sort out that very question. As it stands, the Segway isn't allowed on most North American sidewalks, including those in Ontario." I guarantee that a lot of people are interested in the outcome of this. Even though it's taking place in Canada the court's decision could have an impact on decisions made in the U.S. about the classification of the Segway. |

Re: Canadian Segway Driver Fined $8000
Do you realize the fine also exceeds the cost of the Segway!
Like I mentioned in my previous post, this could have a major impact on future decisions regarding the Segway. |

Re: Canadian Segway Driver Fined $8000
They (the cops) don't want the Segway on the sidewalks because they are usually going faster than people walk; and they don't want them on the road because they go slower than cars and there is a large chance for an accident.
Maybe the Segways just need their own lane... |

Re: Canadian Segway Driver Fined $8000
Well, bikes are allowed on sidewalks and in streets, to my knowledge, and a bike has variable speeds, much like the Segway. You can easily match the speed of traffic with the right key and enough experience. I don't see why the cops need to make such a hassle. I think they're just jealous.

Re: Canadian Segway Driver Fined $8000
At least in New York where I went to college, bikes are illegal on sidewalks, and bicyclists must follow the rules of a motor vehicle, using hand signals, obeying signs, and so on. Of course, it is very rare that a cop will do anything to enforce it. But it does happen.
What to do with Segways is an interesting question. It doesn't seem to me that they belong in the road. If I had one I'm not sure I'd drive in the road if I didn't have to. I don't really see the danger of going on a sidewalk. As long as you slow down to pass people, it's pretty safe. In general, cops are supposed to pull people over when they do something dangerous. The same should apply to Segways. If someone does something dangerous that could impose harm on somebody else, then that person should be fined. Shouldn't it be that simple? Unfortunately (in my opinion), too much attention is payed to written law and not enough to the intent of laws. To give the cops the benefit of the doubt, maybe the segwayer was doing something dangerous? |

Also, $8000 fine for driving without a license and no insurance seems really steep to me. Then again, the American way is to fine really small amounts but catch them over and over again. ![]() Wetzel |

Re: Canadian Segway Driver Fined $8000
I found this on another forum which seems to clearly describe WHY the Segway should be treated as a pedestrian rather than a vehicle.
