3ds max 6 problems

I'm having a problem with 3ds max 6.

Every time I start the program, it locks-up whenever I get to the mentalray.dlz plugin. I've updated to SP1, reinstalled max, and made more disk space. What makes me angry is that it stopped working without any warning!

Has this happened to anyone else? What can I do to fix it?

Specs:
Toshiba Satellite A65-S126
XP Home SP2
2.8 GHz Celeron
256MB RAM - 64 for ATI M-Rage 7000
55GB Harddrive - 6.8GB Free
