Question Two Teams from the Same School?

Is there, or has there been, any teams in FIRST from the same school? Have there ever been two teams entered from the same school? Is it against the rules?

If there are, how do relations work between the two teams?

Their first year, the Cheesy Poofs (Broadway High School, San Jose,CA) had two entries, and two robots. One group of students developed both robots, and staffed both "teams." There are more details about how this happened and how it worked, which Jason Morella can provide. But the basic answer to your question is "Yes."

Thank you for all the replies!

Yes, I would be very interested in how this came about and, especially, how it turned out.

almost the same

During the 2000 and 2001 season our main school(International Academy) was about as close as I've seen to having 2 teams. We had one official school team (349) and one team composed of almost all students from the IA. It's a long story how the 2 teams came about but this year 349 dropped. The old members of the team merged with 469 and it became the new official school team. However, in the past 349 would enter under the IA while 469 was using Lawrence Technological University as their school sponsor cause I don't believe it is legal to have two teams registered from the same school but I may be wrong.

wasn't it because one of the teams was started at a different school who later dropped out? all i know is, they built two identical robots and competed with both, one of which actually won the regional.

Bobcats

anyone who was at battlecry 2 at WPI last year remember team #177? They had 177 and 177.5 the same team with two robots who actually had to face each other in the comp.

so technically you could have 1 school and two robots

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of a FIRST team in regional or national competition. Have there been two teams both registered from the same school competing in the same year with their own robots and their own teams? The closest right now seems to be 469, but they were registered under a different school name. Cheesy Poofs, according to what dlavery said, had two teams registered to the same school. But, from what I'm reading, it would seem that the same people were behind both teams.

I'm curious to know if there have been two independent teams within the same school competing in FIRST concurrently.

If I remember correctly, that occurred because we needed a certain number of robots at Battlecry and 177 usually makes what I like to call "Bobcat Beta": a barebones robot to practice driving with.

I would think that if a school had enough students interested (no problem here) and was able to find a sponsor, they ought to be able to field two teams. BTW Lego League sort of encourages multiple teams. I mentor 7 Lego teams from one middle school and I know of 10 at a school nearby. They were abel to have their own mini comp.
Hope everyone had fun in Florida and are back home safe.

1 School - 2 Teams

I was on Team 469 when we started the team a couple years ago. We had Lawrence Tech. listed as our school mainly so we could hold 'non-profit' status for sponsorship/funding reasons. It had nothing to do with it being illegal to have 2 teams from one highschool, however, we were constantly questioned as to the legality of being a team *without* a highschool. For whatever reasons, students started this independent of the school, and the rules clearly state that FIRST teams must be comprised of *high school students*, yet not necessarily have a specific highschool. This is probably as close as you come to having 2 teams from one school, yet our team currently pulls students from many schools around the county, attempting to give all high school kids a chance to do FIRST if they choose.

OK here is kinda what I remeber. To start off with 2 teams from two different school paid addmissions fees and were ready to go. Once they bolth got there kits one team (the poofs) forged ahead while the other one was completly lost. This discouraged the other team (255 I THINK) and they lost a lot of interest. 254 was aproached by the other team to see if they would help them out. It was basically so late in the game that team 254 decided that the only way they could get 2 bots done was to build identical bots. Both bots did amazing that year and ended up playing each other in the finals. Not bad for 2 rookie teams. This also was the first time that teams 60 and 254 met. Ahhhh memories. I am pretty sure the story is pretty acurate and if not I am sure Jason will correct me. I sure hope he corrects my grammer too :-).

our schools are kinda wierd so bear with me. Currently we have two highschools on the same campus. They are currently building a third which will open next year. We all have classes in each building so we technically go to both schools even though we have a "home" school. So if we have enough intrest next year we could technically have 3 teams if we pay for all of the fees and such? also, currently we have members on our single team from both schools. if we split up would each team have to be made of students from that school or could we mix and match? i don't think it would really matter but i'm putting the question out there anyway.

I believe all of your ideas would work. If you registered one team to each school, it wouldn't matter who was on it. I'm not sure whether two teams from one school works (and apparently noone else knows, either), but since your case would technically involve 3 separate schools, I think it would be fine.
