Re: Stuck sprocket - need advice

I'd like to know where you got that one. My friend has one we use for smashing rock in the quarries for mineral collecting but he got it years ago from an old railroad equipment source, now gone. My biggest is about a 15 lb-er. Of course the Bosch 60 lb electric breaker hammer makes it much easier than both.... WC |

Re: Stuck sprocket - need advice
Thanks Elgin, a pipe wrench did it. I never thought of that. I put one small pipe wrench on the axle and stood on it and took one big pipe wrench on the hub of the stuck sprocket and with nearly my entire weight on the small one (yes I almost lost my balance and fell over) and putting all I had into the big one and a little more WD40 I was able to break it free and now it can rotate all the way around without too too much trouble. I still need the wrenches to turn it, but it isn't too hard. From all my beating, I probably have enlarged the end of the shaft a little (yes I should have used a block of wood), so I'll probably still need a gear puller to get it off but at least now it is free, or at least certainly more free than it was before.
Will something like this work for getting it off? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=45977 It certainly seems cheap enough and looks like it would be a welcome addition to my toolbox (if it works). I'm not buying the "5 tons of pulling power claim" but I certainly think it can live up to all 1299 cents I pay for it. The sprocket is approximately a 20T #35 with hub on a 5/8" shaft |

Re: Stuck sprocket - need advice
that gearpuller would work fine, except i dont know about the quaility. most automotive stores carry them, so instead of paying for shipping go get one in store.

As far as LW and WD-40 go.. Wd-40 is like pouring water on the metal as far as unsticking (not worth it).. and they are both lame compared to the one I use. |
