Accelerometer Sensitivity

How sensitive is the accelerometer, and how well can it be used to determine the speed of the robot (ignoring the fact that a gear-tooth-sensor would be much better equipped for this)?

Also, how well can it detect direction changes due to collision? Suppose I make a 'dumb' autonomous robot, that just uses one of its pre-loaded balls to score for 10 points in the autonomous time period, and does so based on dead-reckoning and displacement (i.e. It'll take X seconds to get to where I need to be, but I got hit at point Y, which puts me Z meters off-course).
