Windows Live - satellite & aerial photography

I dont know if this is old news - I just stumbled across the Windows Live website.

I has street maps, and satellite maps like maps.google and google earth

but for many areas it also has 'birds eye view' mode, which is aerial photography!

I discovered that some of the aerial photographs overlap, so you can get photos of, lets say a house, from two angles - and put them side by side to create a true 3D stereoscopic image.

Re: Windows Live - satellite & arial photography

Some of the arial is almost as old as me... While they have the local mall, they have nothing that has been built within the last what could be easily be 15 years... Its wierd to think of the area without the Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Sam's Club there. The best part is however that they have the roads up to date, so you can see where everything should be but isn't. Same goes with my school which just built two new buildings within the past five years or so, and neither is there. Its funny to look at the "Lower" or old campus that was those temporary trailers that was there for a couple of decades til the new buildings were built. I never realized just how expansive that campus was because they don't use it anymore so you never go down there.

Re: Windows Live - satellite & arial photography

with the aerial views you can choose the camera direction N S E W

for many of the places I looked at the E/W views were taken at a different time of the year from the N/S views.

BTW, the shots of WDW are great, also niagara falls, NY city

I created a 3D view of the statue of liberty - will post it on my aol account later tonight. (too big to post on CD).

These are old satellite photos.

I looked up my house and while it is visible there (it was built in 1989) you can see where the road isn't continued and is dirt for a section of it. The superimposed road on the map doesn't quite follow the contour of the dirt road. The road was completely paved in October of 1991 so the photo has to have been taken between July of 89 when the house was built and October of 91 when the road was completely finished.

Re: Windows Live - satellite & arial photography

the satellite photos may be old, but the birdseye-view aerial photography seems to be fairly recent, at least here in rochester, NY. The new field house at RIT is under construction - almost done - which was completed just last year.

Heres some of those 3D photos I was talking about. When you see 3D with your eyes they are about 3" apart. I would estimate the photos I snarfed these images from were taken about 300 feet apart, so this is extreem 3D. This makes everything look small, as if you are a giant with eyeballs 300 feet apart.

These are cross eyed 3D images, you look at them by crossing your eyes and making the two images converge into one. If you have 3D shutter glasses, or something like the Icuiti V920 you can rename the extension to .jps and view these with a frame sequential monitor card.

Google Earth is a program that seems to be the same thing as "windows live".

I think the images are more up to date as well. I know that the image of my house is only about 1-2 years old based on the car we have parked in the driveway.

Re: Windows Live - satellite & arial photography

I had googleEarth on my PC at work, and I just downloaded it on my laptop at home. The sat images for my house are the same on the Windows site and GoogleEarth. The difference is the interface - so much nicer to scroll around on google earth when each new page isnt coming across the internet.

I have to give WindowsLive extra credit for the aerial photography. Some of the photos in my area were shot in the fall, when the leaves were all full of color, and the images are excellent.

here is a shot of the NE corner of Irondequiote bay, NY - the area where I sail my hobie cat (a friend of mine lives in the white house in the upper left corner). BTW, this photo was not zoomed in all the way.

BTW - I just discovered if you switch the birds-eye-view from the default NS to EW their might be aerial photography in your area. I just did that and found the images of my home. Very cool!
