Three. Team 47 did the trick in 1998. This is even more impressive, because the feat was accomplished in the pre-alliance era.

Who won the championship in '98 and why didn't 47 win?

If that's the case then I know we have a videotape of ESPN coverage of 45 winning the championship that year.
I'll have to look at it now.

As was listed above, 45 won the 1998 championship. As for the second half of your question..."Why did 47 not win?" the simple answer is...attention. Basically, Delphi gathered so much attention by dominating every regional it went to, that by the time it got to nationals, they had a target on their back. It was actually quite amazing...I was witness to their fall. Remember, this was the era of 1 v 1 v 1, so it was very easy for two teams to double up on one. Essentially, both teams went nuts on Delphi, not allowing them to score, and one of them managed to sneak in some points, and Delphi was gone. The roar that went up from the crowd was something very amazing. Of course, if you were on Delphi at the time, I'm sure that roar didn't sound so good to you...but remember, it IS the ultimate show of respect when you think about it.

Kinda like the roar that went up at GTR when 1680's allaince upset 1114's alliance in the first match of the finals. Everybody always loves the underdog.

That year, the matches were 1v1v1 and you only moved on in the tournament if you won the match, 2nd and 3rd was a loss. If you were one of the two teams facing an amazing team like 47, your first goal was to stop 47 and secondly to score. Since the top teams were constantly double teamed, none of the top teams made it very far.

Dean mentioned this as one of the reasons for going to alliances. If some teams were going to ally to beat others, he wanted all the teams to ally.

Edit: Andy beat me to it.

Re: 2006 Double Regional Winners

So the list now stands:

25
111
177
254
395
1114 (x3)
1503 (x3)

I remember there being 13 double winners last year. Why only 7 this year? Is it something about the game? Or just randomness? Any theories?

Re: 2006 Double Regional Winners

I don't know, but I'd think that it'd be easier for a team to win multiple times this year. The way I see it, last year, there was only really one way to score...you cap goals with tetras. This year however, autonomous affords a robot to score up to 40 points in just 10 seconds. Afterwords, 3pters, 1pters and the ramp points + bonus can lead to some nice scoring! With so many opportunities to score, the teams that pick and choose what to do..and do it really well will succeed, in my opinion. Whether it be offense or defense, 3pters or 1pters, or something else which I've yet to see...it's all about doing something well.

Then again, who knows, it might just be chance that last year we had 13 and this year just 7. Maybe less teams signed up for 2 regionals. Maybe the game really is harder. Who knows? I surely don't.

Same thing happened to 177 after getting the #1 seed at Disney. We just got pinned and there were no time limits on it back then.

Re: 2006 Double Regional Winners

The roar was pretty crazy, I remember cheering as well because we(#177) had lost to delphi in the NH regional finals and weren't sure we could beat them, the crab drive they had that year was pretty amazing.
