Re: Team News Paper Articles

We've had a front page appearence (me actually) on a local daily paper and a weekly local paper. We've also gotten some articles in some local papers (probably 3 or 4) since ship date. Most of the information is pretty accurate as well.

Re: Team News Paper Articles

The Post Standard put in a small square of text about us a few weeks ago about our victory...and than this weekend I find a pic of Pink Team half the size of the paper from the boston regional. I just find it funny we never get the spotlight in our own paper...

Re: Team News Paper Articles

There are a lot of teams in our area so it is tough for one team to be featured. However, Newsday did an article on the Long Island Regional and there was a picture of our team.

Re: Team News Paper Articles

Our team is in our local papers often (after every regional and kickoff, during build season) because we send pics and press releases whenever something is going on. They've also covered some of our fundraisers and school assemblies and career fairs we host, as do the 3 local TV stations.

Last month we were featured on our local CBS affiliate's morning TV show. We had 3 3-minute live segments. The reporter and videographer came to our school (at 5:15 a.m.) and we were live at 5:45, 6:15, and 6:45. Great publicity and we were sure to let everyone in our community know it would be on! To get this we just asked to be featured as the station reports live from somewhere everyday.

I'm proud to say that our team members did ALL of the talking during these live segments and did a fabulous job (the advisors just stood in the background and behind the camera).

Re: Team News Paper Articles

We've gotten a fair amount of publicity for our rookie year. I know that we were in Main Line Times as pre-rookies for modifying one of Miss Daisy's robots for Ramp Riot 05. We had a feature article in Main Line Life about us during build season, and Main Line Life is coming to interview us again tomorrow about winning the Highest Seeded Rookie and Rookie All Star Award at the Philly Regional. Also, KYW radio news interviewed our driver at the Philly Regional, so we also have some publicity from that. I think there is another article or two, but I don't remember them...

The only thing that's missing is our school newspaper. We're also working something about the Philadelphia Regional to put on our school's tv channel.

Re: Team News Paper Articles

We finally had a dedicated press release parent to manage it this year, so we had almost weekly coverage in the (weekly) town newspaper as well as biweekly in the county paper and an article or two in the state paper. Last year, we had a few articles and a short piece on the state cable news network.

we've been in the school newspaper twice, both times were 100% incorrect

and the local paper once...very correct, and i'm glad.

Luckly, at my school, three team members are on the school newspaper. So the news is always right and when something great happens we are always in there. Our win at Chesapeake is going to be the front page story in this month's issue.

It's really not magic. We write a lot of press releases. Keep track of reporter's email addresses and such.

We also do a lot: Scrimmages, FLL championships, several robot competitions. We send press releases before events and then we often send a follow up the day before and another a day after events with results. Your football team (or someone) sends in schedules and results. We do the same.

If someone on the team wins an award, we publicize.

We write articles and submit them to newsletters and magazines. We get a LOT of rejections, but every now and then...

We do a lot of presentations at schools, engineering groups, and service clubs. We let them know we have 1/2 or 1 hour presentations. People talk and the word of mouth advertising is effective. Someone in the audience may be a spouse of an editor.

Have people apply for every award: teacher of the year, city student of the year, etc. Publicity is a way of making the public aware of science, math, and engineering activities. The more everyone hears about FIRST, the better!

Our first two years we received almost 0 publicity. It's like finding sponsors, if no one knows about you, it's really hard. But eventually, we were noticed. Now we have people phoning asking about how we are doing or asking for comments. It's kind of like if a reporter is stuck, they have our contact information and they know we are "verbal".

When you do your Chairman's report, print a lot of extra copies and send them to everyone: school board, CEO's, news people, Oprah, local universities, etc...

You know the goofy morning news shows? Invite the personality or the weather person to come to a scrimmage or a regional practice and tell them you will let them drive it in a practice competition.

We also send press releases to the Spanish Outlets.

Make sure you give a lot of info and pictures to your school newspaper.

If you make videos or CD's, make hundreds of copies and send them to EVERYONE.

Invite your congressman to visit your school to see how you are way above average in science and technology activities and how important such programs are to the U.S.

Many radio shows do "remotes” Invite them.

Anything slightly newsworthy -- press release!

Anytime someone shows up, send a thank you email.

No magic, just persistence -- and a LOT of rejection.

Team 175 has been published in many newspapers over the years, usually when we win or place well. Today we were published in the Journal Inquirer. Unfortunately the headline read “Fermi's Buzz Robotics team takes second place in regional competition”. Good headline, except we won.

Recently Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates and Milinda Gates visited our school and stoped by our engineering lab to see the progress of our robot. From what I know that visit should be on the Oprah Winfrey show sometime this month.
