IL/IN/MO/IA Teams

BORED? NO SUMMER PROJECTS?

Expand your engineering horizons and build a cardboard boat! Yes, I said cardboard boat. CLick Here for and idea of what it's like. There's an race in Galesburg, IL on September 10.

Team 648 will be there with 2 boats; Our "FIRST" Attempt (Winner of 2 class II competitions) and their debut 2nd year boat... GP Unit (Expected to break all records held).

This is an incredible event held at Lake Story in Galesburg, IL.

Visit Great Cardboard Boat Regatta for more information and pictures.

I think last year's boat cost approximately $400. Cutting costs isn't hard.

QC Elite will be sporting Class 2 boats. Those are the mechanically powered boats and more of a challenge from an engineering standby.

I hope to see some teams out there.

(I'm hoping to get an area on our webpage sporting different designs from students on the team. And tips and tricks.)

Any questions? Feel free to PM or email me.

The Drive and steering system can be anything, but the hull must be cardboard

Re: IL/IN/MO/IA Teams

Only cardboard can be used to make the boat boat. The drive mechanisms can be made of anything as long as that anything doesn't make the boat more rigid and sturdy.

Re: IL/IN/MO/IA Teams

I've done this before!!! It was in boy scouts (CAC) about two years ago... it rained the whole weekend, ended up being a race to see who's boat would hold together and make it to the finish line.

Have fun doing this, and make sure you smear everything with caulking before you run your canoe!!

Re: IL/IN/MO/IA Teams

Are sails allowed?

Way-back-when when my dad had his windsurfing business, he competed in a competition like this.

On the day of the competition he was the only one to show up with a wind driven craft (built like a windsurfer of course). He beet everyone else by minutes, getting his story in the paper and bringing in some customers to his shop (he competed for the publicity).

Currently, windsurfers hold the record for the fastest wind-driven craft. The record is 56 miles per hour.

If anyone on your team knows how to sail I suggest you consider this.

Re: IL/IN/MO/IA Teams

Sails are optional, but we prefer to go with a human powered boat. I hope it doesn't rain this time. Our first race is in two weeks and i think we're a little behind maybe. We still have to cauk and paint it as well as put it together.

I'll post some pictures tonight when I get off of work if I remember.
