Build your own Arc Welder!

I was browsing through some websites, and came across this interesting little link:

http://www.dansworkshop.com/Homebuil...20welder.shtml

Warning: Do not try this at home, unless you know what you're doing. Tytus should not even be reading this thread. I will be moving out of Florida the second he contemplates hacking up more microwaves.

Re: Build your own Arc Welder!

I also stumbled across this site and I was tempted to go buy some microwaves from yard sales, but decided otherwise. My arc welder, while underpowered and unreliably, still works well enough to make somewhat decent welds. I wonder if this welder is worth the time and money invested into it. I really like how clearly the explanations are, and how detailed the wiring schematic is for either welder.

Re: Build your own Arc Welder!

For those of you thinking of trying this at home, be sure to read the entire article. The use of the microwave oven transformers requires rewinding each one. A microwave uses at least 4000 volts to make the magnetron tube function and that voltage may still lurk inside, stored in the capacitor(s). Since a welder uses low voltage, each transformer will need extensive modification and most of the ovens you will find on the trash heap in this country are wired for 120 volts.

Kind of reminds me of a "do it yourself electric chair" kit I once saw......
