Go to Post If it's the loss of American lives that concerns the nation, why not campaign aggressively against smoking, or improve automobile safety? At least then, the benefits will be tangible, and substantially more significant to the well being of the locals. - Tristan Lall [more]

Success Won't Wait - Duel on the Delaware Book Drive

I thought this was CD worthy when I saw the e-mail blast come across this morning, and hadn't noticed any of the great MOE people post it yet. I was glad to see that it was going to such a great cause in the Philly area.

"The following update is from the organizers of the Success Won't Wait
Book
Drive at the Duel on the Delaware event. Thanks again for all of your
book
donation efforts. Your books are being put to good use!

SUCCESS WON'T WAIT UPDATE

To finish out 2006, we have a very large project in the works with the
Police Athletic League (PAL) centers of Philadelphia. There are 27
centers
in the city which service the needs of urban schoolchildren ages 6-18.

Lt. Susan Slawson from PAL has partnered with us to provide a reward
system
for these kids. Each center will receive a package of approximately 125
books representing a wide age range. These will be used as rewards for
exceptional behavior.

According to Lt. Slawson, using rewards like this in the past has
consistently inspired amazing behavioral changes (finishing homework
assignments, volunteering for projects, etc.). She also said that many
of
these children have NEVER OWNED A BOOK -- something we had a hard time
grasping.

The books that were collected at the third annual Miracle of Reading
Education Book Drive (at the Duel on the Delaware) will help us complete
this project. When finished over 3,000 books, many obtained through
FIRST
volunteers, will be available to children from some of Philadelphia's
most
economically disadvantaged areas.

Thank you for continuing to support our mission. Read now, because
Success
Won't Wait!

Susan McNeill and Vincenza Carrieri-Russo"
