Re: How far are you on your robot?

Today we made a ton of progress, and dare I say, back on schedule. We are having some issues with our sprocket orders coming in, but right now we are working around that by doing everything else, then just attatching sprockets and chain when they come. The chassis is pretty much 100% done and driveable, once our sprockets come in that is. The electronics are mounted, hooked up, and organized nicely. We also finished cutting and assembling the 80/20 for our manipulators, so they are ready to be mounted and tested tomorrow. It was a long work week, but we did get back on schedule, which is good because we are most likely losing Friday unless I transport the robot to my home shop and work there, which might be pointless anyway seeing as we should be done all that can be without those parts.

My guess is that by mid next week this thing should be 100% finished, building-wise that is. That leaves a little more than a week and a half to program, test, fine tune, re-engineer, and practice, which is better than past years where we were literally working up till the FedEx truck arrived.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Our robot is finished (1st phase), ready to test. However, the fine tuning, programming, calibrations, etc. take a lot of time. AND, our drivers are terrible at the moment (new this year). Cant emphasize enough that driving is a KEY part of prepping during the 6 weeks. Robots, IMO, should be done at the latest after 5 weeks.
To ensure this, we spent many weeks prior getting things ready rather than waiting until kickoff. Veteran teams do this and/or have materials ready.
I understand that not every team can do this, like US. But there is a lot of things that teams should and can do to not waste unnecessary time.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

We are currently doing fine and hope to be completely (mechanically) finished by next weekend. After that we can program, wire, and test it.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Eh, we're currently about 2-3 good days behind, but we should catch up Saturday with luck. Designs for the ramp and manipulator are nearly completely hashed out- just final dimensioning and fabrication/welding, and the electrical/pneumatics are done, organized, and troubleshot for the most part. Drive base is up and running like a champ, and if we can get back onto schedule shortly, we should have a little over a week for programming, troubleshooting, practice, and dare I say...powder coating?

We are definitely more organized this year than we have ever been, in 9 years.

Hope everybody can stay sane for the home stretch!

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Team 1345 is on schedule, we should have the robot done (mechanically and electrically) by this saturday. After that, we got a whole week to play with the code. 6th week will be used for lots of driver practice.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

We have just completed a bare chasis with wheels. Other than that we have done some work on our programming and electronics and our VEX bot is almost done, but we still have a lot of work to do on the big robot. But were getting closer everyday.

Re: How far are you on your robot?

Some major setbacks today. Chassis was giving us trouble with the bolt holes lining up....

Also, our big order from the Robot Marketplace never came in. We talked to them, and they never even got our check, which we sent two Saturdays ago. We are entering week 4 without the drive sprockets, shaft, chain, and flange mount bearings. Looks like we will have to put in an identical order with McMaster tomorrow and hope that we will have enough time to finish in time...right now we are still shooting for having it done by the beginning of the 6th week, but it might not happen.

I won't be able to make it to the meeting tomorrow, and we are losing friday (school's are closed). Hopefully we can get our McMaster order by Thursday so we can work late that night and all day Friday to get this thing moving....Wednesday when I return the only thing to do is to complete as much of the chassis as we can, then start work on the manipulators...leaving one week for dialing in that and the last week for testing.
