A sad day for science. Mr Wizard passes away.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070612/...v/obit_herbert

I know that Mr. Wizard (Don Herbert) was one of the most notable TV personalities who first introduced science as cool. Along with fellow TV scientist, Bill Nye, they both had an impact in my choice of a career in Engineering even before I got involved in FIRST..

Mr. Wizard, we salute you! You will be missed.

This is a sad day indeed. 'Mr. Wizard' was one of my most favorite shows when I was younger. It was on his show I first saw the straw through the potato demo and he was using paper straws then. It may have been his demos on elelctricity that really got me started in experimenting and now to think of it, television. Pretty hard to demo some things in black and white. Long live his memory!

Re: A sad day for science. Mr Wizard passes away.

Mr. Wizard was the reason I conducted a couple of experiments that ended up with us having to close off 1/2 of the house and air it out for a couple of days with the windows open in dead of winter.

I got into a whole lot of trouble but it was so much fun feeling like a scientist.

89 years, wow.
Rest in peace Mr. Wizard -

Mr. Wizard introduced half of the Western world to the possibility that science was actually something that remotely resembled being cool. And he did it in a way that even I, the heir to the village idiot, could understand.
Most of the jocks, preppies, and beauty queens didn't care.
The rest of us proved we knew better than they did.
Probably most of us will look at our school's Science Department video collections, and do what I would probably do...
Raise a toast with our favorite caffeine, and say, "Cheers."
And start working on the preseason fundraising again.
So here's to you, Mr. Wizard.
(Grabs a can of Dr. Pepper from a cooler on the back porch.)
Cheers.

Re: A sad day for science. Mr Wizard passes away.

Stephen Colbert did what I am assuming to be one of Mr. Wizard's experiments at the end of his show last night (6/21). He put an egg in a bottle with an opening smaller than the diameter of the egg. The video, I have checked, is on Colbert Nation.

Otherwise, my dad told me about him on the day of his passing. I sure wish we had a guy like him on TV nowadays. It would surely make for stiff competition against the rest of 'reality' TV.

RIP Mr. Wizard

-Joe
