FIRST LOGO Guidelines

Hello Everyone,
I'm working on a new template for our team's site. The idea I'm currently playing with has a yellowish header and sidebar where the FIRST logo would fit perfectly (see here). I read the guidelines and the two things that might be a problem are the background and the space around the logo:
Quote:
Do not obscure and weaken our logos by placing them on visually active background patterns, strong textures or incompatible shades of color.
Quote:
Logo protected area:
Focus and strong visual impact are achieved by keeping a “quiet” space around our logos. The minimum protected area, or clear space, is determined by the height of the letters within the logo shown as “X” in the diagram on
this page.
Unfortunately, the manual doesn't give a number for how large the quiet zone should be.

You can see a screenshot of what I'm talking about here. Does it look like the FIRST logo is OK to you? http://www.wildgardenseed.com/Taj/phred-header.png

And...for official advice, any idea who should I email at FIRST for clarification?
Thank you!
- Taj

Re: FIRST LOGO Guidelines

I don't see a problem with what you have done. The Logo is crisp and the background does not detract from it. Does anyone know if there is someone at FIRST who could give him an offical "yes" or "no?"

I agree the usage looks consistent with the style guide and is acceptable.

I would like to suggest that we self police this issue here on CD unless there is some sort of consensus that there is a problem and need advisement. Therefore this one looks good and I wouldn't bother FIRST.

The reason I mention this is that FIRST staff is very small and very busy. Dave or someone from GDC can comment to this but I would also suggest waiting a week or so and seeing if there is an area that tough questions can be posted on the FIRST Q&A forums website.

Then they can answer it when it best works for them and the world can see the answer.

Cheers

The copy of the logo standards on my hard drive (the comprehensive version, downloaded in January) shows the protected area on page 5. For the FIRST logo, the space is the height of the word FIRST in the logo on all sides. For the FLL logo, it's the height of the letters FLL. The copy I have doesn't mention the JFLL, FTC, or FRC logos (I don't think they had updated the document at the time), but I'd be surprised if the rules there were different. I've attached the screenshot of that part of the document.

Looking at the example linked above, you appear to be cutting it a bit too close on the right-hand side. The fixes aren't that hard; you can either move the line to the right, or move the logo (and probably the text to the left of it, lest you have the same problem again) a little bit to the left.

Ah, thank you! I somehow missed the how the X was equal to the height of the word FIRST. Yes, it's a little close.

Re: FIRST LOGO Guidelines

Everything looks pretty good. Just make the logo smaller if you need more breathing room. No need adjust everything else on the page header!!

Re: FIRST LOGO Guidelines

Where did you find the website guidelines? I have not started our webpage, and I'm not sure if anyone else can code. I'm considering doing everything in CSS, which is easier that HTML for me. Any suggestions?

You can find it in this part of the manual.

If you'd like help with your site, let me know. I'm helping two other rookie teams at the moment.

Re: FIRST LOGO Guidelines

I think it looks pretty good, but my only thoughts are, the FIRST logo should be a prominent thing on your website. Placing it in the upper right corner instead of giving it space like your team's logo makes it seem almost like an afterthought.

Except for what Billfred already pointed out, if you do choose to leave it there, I don't think you're breaking any rules.

My honest opinion as a website judge...
