Programming laptops.
I was wondering the percentage of programmers who use their own laptops and those that use school computers.
Currently I am using an old laptop that runs too slowly for fast matches and am trying to get the school to allow us to use one of the newer computers, or get money together to buy my own. |

1568's student programmers use school desktops for vex and use two old donated laptops for FRC. 1493's mentors all use their own laptops(RPI requires us to have them anyway) and the students use a new laptop donated through DonorsChoose.org(I believe that is the website, if it is not then it is a very similar site.) |

Re: Programming laptops.
All of the laptops that we use for CAD and programming are personally owned by members of the teams. This is because ever member of my high school is required to have a specific laptop for school. Therefor we have no computer labs in our high school.

Re: Programming laptops.
We make use of excessed computers from sponsors, as well as, some loaners. The advantage is they all have native serial ports.
The disadvantage is that they are a little worn. |

Re: Programming laptops.
We were lucky enough to have Ford as a sponser. They've been great to us and have let us use 2 desktops for in-room programming, a laptop loaned for the competitions, and a projector to do our presentations. We'll give them back at the end of the season.
They're all Dell machines with built in wireless + serial ports so it works beautifully! We also have an old computer brought from home as a web-browser for non-programming folks to use whenever they like. |

Re: Programming laptops.
1726 has a few donated laptops that are several years old so they're slow, low on memory, and have the bonus of no serial port so we use the orange VEX cable to program both the VEX robots and the FRC robot. Our programming mentor has his own laptop that he has used to program the FRC robot in the past.
At one regional our rookie year the code in the RC somehow became corrupted, and the programming mentor was on a trip somewhere else, and I used my own really old 150 mhz laptop (with a serial port) to load the code and it worked and I was amazed. |

Re: Programming laptops.
This year we had a sponsor who was generous enough to donate an unused laptop to let us program with.

Re: Programming laptops.
1675 has a laptop or two of its own on which code is developed, but we mainly program the robot with my laptop which has a serial port.

Re: Programming laptops.
My company (Computers For Communities) donated a bunch of Dell P3 laptops to the team. We have 3 programming laptops, and a few CAD laptops (IBM P4s) from the school (they let us use them indefinitely.)

Re: Programming laptops.
I have EasyC on my personal laptop along with some other random robotics related stuff. Our team has some desktops and two Laptops that we use officially for programming. Our main mentor went out and bought a laptop in 06-ish and thats the one that is used the most.

Re: Programming laptops.
We have an HP laptop that we use to program on. It doesn't have a serial port, but we have the connector and it's already loaded with the C18 compiler and MPLAB.
