My whole point is that by not using a template they get more exposure to CSS, HTML, and maybe PHP which is a huge part of the experience.

On the other hand, it might not be a desired part of the experience. For someone whose goal is merely to present information in an easy-to-access way, using a well-tweaked template could be the best solution.

Is the process more important, or is the result? That depends on whether the evaluation looks at the web site and pages or at the development tools and source code. As someone who uses web sites more often than creating them, my obvious bias is that the result is more important.

There are valid reasons for starting on your own from scratch, just as there are valid reasons for using kits that are available to you.

I have no strong opinions here, but I don't think that that is a valid comparison. Creating a custom transmission requires expensive tools that many do not have access to. Learning (X)HTML, CSS, PHP, etc. is free and doesn't require expensive tools at all (they can even be written in Notepad). All it takes is effort and a little time.

I feel really bad about taking so long with these, with finals and now switching dorms and about to start summer classes I'm getting them done in my free time. The way I do them takes extra long so bare with me.

I have 2 done so for you, theres 30 teams ahead.

In better news, I'll defiantly have them done before next kick off
