Re: Does CD affect alliance selections?

I believe that CD has the affect that teams get "legend" status and newer teams might look at teams like 71, 67, 111, and 1114 differently because of it. If you are new and you look on CD and see that 1114 is the only team to win 3 regionals twice, then you are going to look at them as "THE" team to beat. When you are at a regional and the MC says that 71 has won the championship 4 times, you start dreading playing against them. Most of the time the "legend" teams are going to back up the hype put out there about them, but if I was a new team and did hear about 1114, it would definitely make an impact on how I view them.

Most people at the competitions will look at CD and the Blue Alliance for pre-scouting, but most will make their decision about teams based on the way they preform on the field and not from the hype about them.

My point of making this thread was to say that although people and teams think they are making decision based only on how teams preform on the field, their views and opinions on teams are subconsiously altered or slanted by psychological phenoma such as primacy effect, schemas and confirmation bias, started here on CD.

Re: Does CD affect alliance selections?

Yes, many teams who do not have great scouting make picking decisions based off a teams history or their relationship with that team. Its happened to us, last year at GTR we played both our morning matches on Saturday with 1334. In the first match we played well together and with bot of us scoring it was an easy win, then in our second match our arm broke seconds before the match started, so we played defense against 188 and kept them to one tube while we let 1334 score and win the match for us. 1334 ended up with the second or third seed (after 2056 picked 1114), and even though we were a good scoring bot I wouldn't have picked us with the second pick (probably 854). So yes teams that are better known or have a good working relationship with the picking team can have alot to do with selections.

I'm also in a Phyc class this semester too, and know what your talking about. The confirmation bias on why you won't pick a team because you think that are snobbish, ( not saying this with any team in mind ) and you look for the only things that make them look snobbish and that whole deal. So yeah, I get the point your making.

Re: Does CD affect alliance selections?

There are a lot of great teams that aren't on CD much if at all. Don't forget about them!

Re: Does CD affect alliance selections?

I'll say it right now, I have put teams lower on a selection list (or taken off completely) because based on how they act on CD, I think that they are too cocky to trust them, or that they are too argumentative to want to work with them. If someone is really cocky on CD, especially if they list themselves as driver, that makes me afraid to pick them because I don't know if they'll change on the field because they think their robot is unbeatable and want to do their own thing.

Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong, but I'll say for sure, I've done that in the past...

Re: Does CD affect alliance selections?

As the scouting officer for my team, I can tell you that the preconceived information I read on CD does affect my view towards teams in competition a little bit. But I can tell you that when we have the scouting meeting Friday night and we make our lists, I am objective. Plus I can tell you that most of the kids on the team aren't on CD a lot and don't really know about other teams coming to the comp. We go purely by the data we get in the competition and the feedback we get from the kids who are scouting. So no CD does not affect how we pick robots.
