Ray Harryhausen is 88 today :-)

Today is Ray Harryhausen's 88th birthday. There are very few people that have done as much for the unique art form of stop-motion animation has he has. The level of creativity shown with films from "Jason And The Argonauts" all the way through to "Clash Of The Titans" (ignoring the presence of Harry Hamlin for the moment) exceeded anything being done by anyone else at the time. Unlike "modern" stop-action and CG animation films, which frequently feature a production staff of thousands, Harryhausen did virtually everything himself. His work still sets a standard that most of us can only dream of attaining.

Re: Ray Harryhausen is 88 today :-)

Stop motion animation... even with computers to speed up the process... is a time-consuming task. Harryhausen's work is truly amazing, but even more so considering that it was all done on film.

One small example of the respect in which he is held is the reference made to him in Monsters Inc.

Happy Birthday Harry!

Ray Harryhausen is a legend in stop motion photography. He has influenced a generation of people in the field of animation.

Happy birthday Mr. Harryhousen.

P.S. Jason, When i first saw Monsters Inc, and I heard the reference to Ray Harryhausen I laughed out loud ... sadly, I think I was the only one in the room to get the reference. Seems I am a geek

Wow.
I had no idea that he was still around.
Considering Hollywood is reeling from the recent passing of another FX giant (Stan Winston) having him still around is a big deal. The man is an icon of the industry and I hope he enjoys many more birthday's to come!
