Wiring a potentiometer to the Analog Breakout
So we have some shiny new potentiometers that we would like to use on our robot this year but I don't have any idea how to wire them to the Analog Breakout. Specifically I would like to know which connector on the potentiometer goes to which pin on the Analog Breakout.

For your vishay pots, the wiper is pin 2, and the other two pins are 1 and 3. Last edited by EricVanWyk : 18-01-2009 at 22:05. Reason: Clarify that the pin out stated is on the pot end, not on the breakout end. |

We use pots like that. Our solder didn't like sticking to the pins very well, so we gobbed lots of solder on there and covered it with silicone to make sure nothing moved.
Just in case you were having trouble. |

Josh,
With this particular type of solder device, you must be careful to heat both the wire and the solder terminal before adding solder to the joint. Also be sure that the wire is tightly wound around the terminal before soldering. A good soldered connection is a good mechanical connection first. If you first wire this up for a sensor and it would be more convenient for your programming to reverse it's operation just switch the wires on terminals 1 & 3. |

Be VERY careful to wire the moving wiper to the signal pin on the Analog Breakout. If you do wire the wiper to either 5V or GND, you will short the power supply at one of the extremes. The power supply on the breakout should survive this but it will become very warm and all of the your sensors will lose power until the short is removed. Depending on the wiper and wire capability, you might even fry the wire and/or wiper.
