Which axis for accelerometer?

We have our accelerometer hooked up to the y-axis, but are getting fairly "twitchy" readings. We want to get an accurate reading so that we can try to compute velocity. Is the y-axis the right axis to do this? If not, which axis should we be using?
please and thank you for any information you might have.

Re: Which axis for accelerometer?

as far as I know, the x, y, and z axes are the exact same kind of sensor, so it doesn't matter which one you use. you should pick whichever axis is pointing in the direction you want to measure (directions are marked on the board I think).

"twitchy" readings are to be expected though. I think that it will be fairly difficult to get a reasonable velocity from the accelerometer with the hardware we have been given. we spent about a week on it and then gave up. we'll be using an non-driven wheel with an encoder to sense velocity (yes, this is legal, there is specific Q+A about it).
