Bumper Backing

In rule <R07> specifies the bumper must be supported by the frame.

Quote:
M. The entire length of the BUMPER backing must be supported by the structure/frame of the ROBOT (i.e. the backing material must not be in “free space” between or beyond attachment points) (see Figure 8 – 3).
We have a preliminary design that puts 4 steel vertical bars on the bumper backing to hold it in between the 8020 frame. Bumper is about 5 inches tall, 8020 frame is about 9 inches between the top and bottom bar.
Would this design satisfy <R07M> or does the back of the bumper have to be directly mounted to the robot frame/8020?

Thanks,
Matt

To satisfy <R07-M> the back of the bumper must be supported along it's entire length. The easiest (and only) way I have seen this done is with a horizontal member.

To use vertical members there would likely have to be a whole lot of them to support the entire length of the bumper.

Re: Bumper Backing

Sounds like you have a few spans of "free space" behind the bumper, doesn't it?

See if there's a way to run one horizontal frame member (or steel support piece) all along behind the bumper, about midway up it.

We designed our frame to have it's upper structural piece made as a big rectangle of squre tubing, at the middle of the bumper zone. We'll have brackets at the corners that go up above the frame, to allow the bumper bolts to attach.
