Chairmans presentation format?

Hi everyone,

My team is wondering about the format for the chairmans presentation. After reading some of the stuff on the FIRST website, we're under the impression that we get only 5 minutes- including set up time and introducing ourselves to the judges. Does anyone know if we get time to set up and then start the 5 minute presentation, or if setting up cuts into our time (we're presenting at the Virgnia regional)? It would be great if someone who has already presented(especially the recent DC regional) could share what happened.

Thanks.

You walk in and have 5 minutes from when you enter.

This is not entirely true.
If you have visual aids, banners, video, etc., I'm sure they'll allow a few moments to set things up. This is based on our experiences in entering and winning at 3 different regionals over the years.

Re: Chairmans presentation format?

That's good to know... I was going off of my team's experiences timing presentations from the minute they walk in the room. I thought the rules said that set up time was part of 5 minutes?

Isn't it also true that the total time allotted is around 10 minutes and that the generally accepted time for the presentation and question session is split 5/5 but you have the option to take more time for either the presentation or the questions from the judges?

Nope. Just checked the rules and they dictate a 5/5 split. This note is also relevant:

Quote:
NOTE 1: If the presentation requires special equipment, the team is responsible for bringing it to the interview, and the time required to set up the equipment will count as part of the team’s allotted 5 minutes.

Re: Chairmans presentation format?

I've only presented in NY, but from my experiences there, it seems like the judges are not too strict about timing. We always plan our presentation to be around 5 mins, not including introduction or set up time. The judges then ask questions, but I've never noticed them time anything.

In my opinion, judges just want to get an idea of what your team is about and what you have done to deserve Chairmans.

Re: Chairmans presentation format?

When we've presented, we've always included set up and introductions in our 5 minutes. We've heard that you can go over slightly on your presentation time, but have always wanted to leave as much time for questions as possible. There may be some judges who will allow the lee-way for set up time and introductions, but what if you get the one crew who doesn't?
