NASA Ames Internship Opportunity
NASA Ames Research Center is proud to offer a robotics internship for 2nd year or higher college students. This student will work primarily with FRC Team 1868. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via private message.
Job Title: Robotics Lab Intern Location: NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) - Mountain View, CA Duration: Part Time ~ 8 months (~20+ hours a week, October - May) Responsibilities : The candidate will be responsible for working with an all Girl Scout High School Robotics Team and assisting the various other high school based robotics teams who work in the NASA ARC Robotics Lab. In addition the candidate will be working closely with volunteer engineering mentors and student and adult team leaders. The teams are part of FIRST Robotics (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Responsibilities also include: Providing students with guidance on component and system design Training and assisting students in use of tools and equipment Assisting in the manufacturing of parts for robots Enforcing all NASA safety regulations in the Robotics Lab ● Ensuring continued cleanliness and organization of workspace, part and material storage, and equipment ● Ensuring timely progress is maintained towards completion of robots and other associated tasks Preferred Qualifications: Technical Background ○ Ability to use and instruct in the use of: ■ Hand tools ■ Power tools ■ Machine tools (mill/lathe/drill press/bandsaws, etc) ■ Soldering irons ○ Ability to use CAD/CAM software. Solidworks and MasterCAM experience preferred. ○ Knowledge of CNC mill programming/setup. Haas experience preferred. ○ Understanding of the basic physics related to gear ratios, force, acceleration, and friction ○ Understanding of DC motors and simple electronic sensors and systems ○ General mechanical design and system understanding. ○ Previous experience in FIRST Robotics, FSAE(Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Design Competition), Mini Baja, or similar programs highly desired. Attributes ○ Organized ○ Well spoken and communicative ○ Safety Conscious ○ Ability to work under pressure and meet short deadlines ○ Ability to work with students of varying technical abilities ○ Proactive and self-motivated ● Additional Qualifications ○ Candidate must be a US Citizen to work as a NASA Associate ○ Background screening required ○ College sophomore status or higher ○ Ability to work late afternoons/evenings and some weekends ■ Job requires 20 hours per week except in robot build season (January through February) which will be 40 hours. ■ Additional paid hours optional during build season ( per agreed limit) ■ Opportunity to travel with teams to regional competitions and championships To apply, visit http://eap.usra.edu/ and click "apply now".
