How far can you gear up a nine inch Mechanum without blowing the jaguars?

How far can you gear up a nine inch Mechanum without blowing the jaguars? Obviously, in this competition, you want to be fast and maneuverable (though as to which takes precedence, I'm not sure). So, our team is considering Mechanums; to do this effectively, we'd need to have a large gear ratio to speed it up, but if we gear it up too much, we're afraid that we might bust the jaguars when strafing, when the power requirements are greatest. Is this even possible? What is optimum?

If you can't figure out drive gearing, custom mecanum wheels might be a bit much for your team.

Wouldn't do anything to the jaguar. It might damage the motor though...

I'm with Chris here. Maybe it's time to consider more conventional drivetrains.

Re: How far can you gear up a nine inch Mechanum without blowing the jaguars?

You may damage the motor, the jaguar is made to take 40-amps continuous and it has a 40-amp breaker to protect it and if I remember right they have a built in thermal overload protection so they won't overheat..

Motor curves are your friend if you are considering this. They can be found in the KOP manual.

That being said I am with Don and Chris, if nobody on your team can do motor curves and drive gearing, I think you should focus on those aspects with off the shelf 8 or 10" mecanums, provided you didn't just type 9 by mistake not realizing their true dimensions

Re: How far can you gear up a nine inch Mechanum without blowing the jaguars?

Last year our team used eight inch mechanums with a 6:11 gear ratio. We were using CIM motors, and It worked great for us. Were basically duplicating that drive train for this years game. I'm not sure what effect that would have on Jaguars, but that basic system has proven to have decent speed by any standards, and we've never had anything fail. FYI the manuverability is a huge bonus. Good Luck!
