[FTC]: World Championship??
Ok just looking at the list already I've noticed there are 110 teams invited. Which means what did FIRST extend the number cap too? and is the first tier lottery only one day? because one of our teams who was a first pick has already been invited. Does that mean because the second team we have who was a first pick didn't hear anything means they are not going to the championship? Really What I want to know is, is the first Tier Lottery done yet.

Re: [FTC]: World Championship??
Because of the ridiculous number of teams in NJ, we had three spots open. They got the result for the lottery a week or so after the tournament.

Re: [FTC]: World Championship??
Some info here may be wrong, but this is what I've gathered from researching about how the lottery works.
The lottery is not a one day event, and not as random as it sounds. My understanding is that the "lottery" part of the system is only how they determine the order of which they extend the invites. This means at some point early in the season, FIRST has a lottery to determine the order of the different tournaments. So as the season goes along, and as the order permits, they will give out the invitations to the teams in the first tier of the lottery. Because the order of the list in no way reflects the order of the tournaments, some teams will hear back very quickly while some will have to wait for other tournaments to be held that are above them on the list. Looking at the list of teams invited, you can see that some tournaments have three teams invited and some still have two. If I counted correctly, there are 44 regional tournaments, and therefore 88 automatic invitations. As you mentioned, they seem to be expanding the field to a number larger than the previous 100 teams, so it would seem that most of the first tier will get an invitation. However, until we know the official number of teams FIRST wants, we can't know for sure how far through the tiers they will get. For now, we can count the number of tournaments that have already had a first pick team invited and conclude that's the current spot in the lottery order. I counted 39 tournaments that have already been held, and 27 tournaments with more than the two automatic invites. This means we are at 28 on the list of 44 and would also mean that one of the tournaments yet to be held is the 28th slot, holding up 12 tournaments in the lottery. Connecticut, Nevada, Michigan, Wyoming, Tennessee, Potsdam, Alberta, Minnesota, British Columbia, Illinois, Hudson Valley, and Delaware all must be lower than the 28 slot in the lottery. Any other tournament already held is then higher. This could be useful information when potentially looking at a 2nd tier. I cannot say for sure if this is exactly how it works, as I'm sure there are some exceptions for various tournaments and what not. Hope this helps any who may have been confused and if anyone else has any information, please share! |

Re: [FTC]: World Championship??
Ryan,
I am not sure how this affects your theory, but, some first picks already had earned invitations at other tournaments. For example, the first pick team in Delaware already had an invitation. In that situation, I don't know if that means their lottery invite gets passed to the second pick or not. |

I don't know if that's right. Delaware was one of the very first state competitions in our region. I'm pretty sure that if there are extra spots, the lottery is run by the state, not by FIRST headquarters. The amount of spots, I'm fairly certain, are given beforehand. NJ had a large amount of teams this year, so to give an accurate representation, and not give an advantage to teams in other states, we got an extra spot, which was given by lottery to the Winning alliance partner and Think award winner, 4031. Different awards give you a certain amount of ballots in the lottery, and that team had a large amount, so they got it. |

Re: [FTC]: World Championship??
From what I know about the lottery,at least the for the 1st tier, it's selected randomly from all the state/regional competitions. In fact, the event holder actually announced Oregon had won the 1st lottery spot during the alliance captain meeting.
So my guess would be if you didn't hear anything, your state is probably still in the run for lottery spots. |

Re: [FTC]: World Championship Lottery
Team 542 is in the first tier for Nevada. Does anyone KNOW how the lottery system works this year and when the lottery results will be announced? It really would be nice to hear from someone in authority at FIRST.

Re: [FTC]: World Championship??
Our sister team is in the second tier, so our mentor called FIRST earlier this week, asking about their chances. FIRST said that the field this year will be 128 teams, so it does not look like the lottery will reach the second tier. Figured others may want to know.

Re: [FTC]: World Championship??
One way to make suggestions to FIRST about future events is to have your team contact/coach/mentor fill out the survey that was recently emailed to them about future growth plans. It is very important and you will help get your voice heard.
Check with your main contact on how they will answer the questions (or have answered the questions if they already had). |
