Looking for project managment system (web based?)

Project organization has never been our team's strong suit. This year I would like to get a jump on scheduling and project management. What I am looking for is a project management system that can be collaboratively used by the team members to track their progress and remind them of important dates and tasks. It would be great if it was web based so we wouldn't have to install anything on our local systems. Anybody have any ideas?

Google docs has worked with our team for some of our organization. You can share it to everyone on the team and manage read/write access. 973 likes to use the spreadsheet from google docs for most of our projects. Our handbook and other important papers with "document".
Just an idea

This is a very interesting idea. I think I might propose it to my team. Then again, we just use our forum for everything. But to take it a step further, you might want to code it yourself. It would be a great exercise for your rookie programmers - php is a great first language to learn, it's like C++ without the annoying parts, such as declaring variables. Our entire website is custom-coded in php. It was actually pretty fun.

At work we use Basecamp to manage all of our tasks and communications. You can create tasks, assign people to them, and even assign deadlines by task or To Do list. This works great for us. There is a free version that is available (the very small link below the list of plans) that might offer just enough for a team. Since it is used by many companies there are several other products out there that integrate into it.

At work we also use Beanstalk to manage our code which has the the ability to integrate into Basecamp.

I actually use Basecamp behind the scenes on my team to help me keep track of everything that needs to happen.

There was a time when I attempt to do exactly what you are. Unfortunately our teams leadership was completely opposed any kind of structured, and being held accountable project plan.

There is an open source tool call Dot Project for Project Management.
http://www.dotproject.net/

It's easy to install, only requires PHP, and MYSQL. although you need to install it on your own server. If your team has its own web site it's likely you have the necessary components.

It's a web based interface for end users to manage their tasks as well as administration.

It has Gantt charts, email notifications for tasks behind schedule, it's a very powerful tool. Get it installed quickly, learn how to use it and administer it BEFORE build season arrives.

I highly recommend it.

Team 781 (Kinetic Knights) used Microsoft dotProject for the 2010 - 2011 administrative season.

Wow, dotProject looks like a really great thing. I'm going to bring it up with my team and see if other people think it could be useful. Thanks for bringing it up!
