Let's help Columbine High

Coming back to reality after the competition ended, I started thinking about Columbine High School and the tragedy that happened there last week.

I was thinking that it would be nice to help... but what do they need? Not stuffed animals or flowers, they need to get a FIRST team.

Think about it: what is a better distraction to all of the crap that they are going through? Also, it sounds like they could use an option to the usual sports programs most high schools offer.

As an engineer, I put myself in the shoes of any engineer who works for a company in the Littleton community. I would want to help out, but how? I am sure that there are corporations who are making efforts in Littleton to help as much as possible.

Let's give them a tool... let's introduce FIRST to them.

I think that the companies should be our target. The HS is probably being inundated with so many offers of help that they might not catch info about a robotic contest. Since these companies will be eager to help the local students, they will probably see how this competition would fit in perfectly.

I've already targeted two businesses after a bit of net surfing: Hathaway Corp. (www.hathawaycorp.com) and SAS Circuits (www.sascircuits.com) seem to be able to support a team technically, with some help from some experienced teams. I sent a letter offering condolences and info about the competition to these two addresses: sales@hathawaycorp.com and jeri@sascircuits.com (HR rep).

I am posting this on 47's site for a few reasons:

1. They are in Colorado. That's far away from many of us. I don't know any companies around Denver, and maybe some of you might. Hopefully, one of you has friends or relatives in the area, and they could help us introduce FIRST. If any of you know other capable companies in that area, then we should contact them also.

2. They might need support from more than just our team. I don't think that Colorado has any teams yet, so they will be on thier own. Without a few teams' support, they might falter.

3. The more that these companies hear about FIRST, then they will be more inclined about starting a team. What they need is for some students to tell these companies what FIRST means to them and how it would help Columbine HS.

I will keep you posted if I hear anything back from Littleton... also that goes for the rest of you. Let's do this together. We might be able to 'make a difference'.

Andy B.
