$$$ How much do your students need to raise? Please respond!!!

Our team has always required fundraising of our students. It is a team goal (this year $5000).

We are proposing a budget for next year, but our sponsor may increase the amount...

How much do your students need to raise. Please respond!!!

: We are proposing a budget for next year, but our sponsor may increase the amount...

: How much do your students need to raise. Please respond!!!

This varies from one team to another:

How many events do you enter? (x4000)
How many members travel per event?
Airfare or buses?
Overnight stays at events?
Material costs for prototyping robot components and additional parts?
Do you have to pay for printing, paper, postage?
Publicity costs? Tee shirts, buttons, etc.?

Even if your sponsor pays 100% of your costs, the benefits
of holding a fundraiser are more than monetary. If your
team divides into committees, it's an opportunity for
everyone to work on the same project. On large teams, a car wash or
yard sale may be one of the few times, except for competitions,
when the entire team is together.

Our students are responsible for all of their expenses - travel, hotel, food, shirts, buttons, etc. Baxter picks up the tab for the entry fees, robot building, and most of the Engineers expenses.
Last year the students (31) raised over $1,000 each.

Uhm, how'd you manage that??? What kind of fundraisers do you do??? Our students hafta raise the money to get them to nationals.. This year it was $600.. The team picked up the cost for the travel stuff to regionals.. We require the students to sell $60 worth of candy to be able to send the skeleton crew we sent to regionals this year.. All other fundraising get split 50/50 between the individual and the team..

We gave presentations to Civic Clubs, Banks, other business and asked for donations. Being in a small town really helps here because the local paper ran a front page article every Monday for six weeks so everyone in town knows about FIRST. We live in a vacation/resort area with fishing being a large activity. Ranger Boats donated a new Bass Fishing Boat, we bought the motor, and then raffled the package. This was a very successful venture. Ranger Boats got a tax deduction, lots of good publicity and we raised alot of money!

All of our students were given a $350 'participation fee' if they were on the Florida-bound group. However, when all of our fundraising was done, we would do the following:

After the list of students travelling to Florida was determined, we would add up all the hours spent TOTAL by the Florida-bound students, as well as the total amount raised through our fundraising efforts. We then divided the amount raised by the total hours, to get an 'dollars per hour' value. Then, each student had their participation fee lowered, based on how much time they had logged up to that point.

The'Chiefs' had 1 major fundraiser and several smaller ones, this year and raised $11,000.00 in profit. As some of you are aware by attending the Chief Delphi Invitational we had a raffell for a Super Computer.

Add this fundraiser to donations from the community and we have funds to pay many student expenses.

Students must have ownership in the team. They must work for and not have everything handed to them.
To dispell all the rumors..... Pontiac Central / Delphi Team #47 is NOT a wealthy team.

Our students work very hard all year, we are a year round program.

Also, at least to me, there is a difference between fundraising and sponsorship. We have had both sponsors and fundraising activities this past year. What Greg Mills posted about going to groups and asking for donations is something I would classify under sponsorship. What Kate mentioned about selling candy I would put under fundraising. At least on my team, sponsorship is left more to the adults, and fundraising is done by both adults and students.
