I think a lifetime of learning properly and then teaching others and inspiring the youth is more important to myself at least than being on the news for a couple seconds during a voice over.

There are laws of physics, useful rules of thumb, and cold hard economics that come into play to be sure but at it's core Engineering is Art. For these artists, there is no substute for the sound engineering judgement.

There is almost always more than one solution to any engineering problem. One part of elegant design is picking the one that makes the most sense for a particular design problem, even if that means "breaking" some normally established "rules". |

FIRST is difficult and it is challenging, but you aren’t necessarily required to go off and build an 8 motor drivetrain and 4 motor / 8 pneumatic piston arm mechanism for the heck of it when a 2 motor non-shifting drivetrain and 2 motor arm does just as good a job. |

Is FIRST making it too easy?... yes they are making it easier than years past. But I would also say that does that matter? If students are still inspired to pursue more advanced designs and eventually a career in the technology sector we still have met our ultimate goal. |

Skill in software engineering is all about algorithmic understanding and intuition. Implemenation is an important, but ultimately secondary, concern. Programming languages are more or less arbitrary.

A well-working FIRST robot can be charismatic. People are attracted to it. Teams rally behind it. Little kids stare with wide eyes. Relatives say to their friends "look at what my niece helped invent". This is an awesome thing.

The students that I have known in FIRST over my 8 years of involvement have been far more inspired by the competition and some of the jaw dropping creations of "elite" teams than by anything that we made ourselves. |
