WOOOOOOOWWWW this is awesome. You should be very proud of yourself. Do I have your permission to borrow this and modify for my teams usage?????
18-02-2011 13:00
Josh FritschWow, very nice. Only question I have is on the "Scout Data Input" or "Printable Sheets", you have different options for combinations of tubes on the pegs....how do you record, for example, if there is a Red and White on the peg, or Blue and Blue, vs. just having a normal tube and an uber tube? Basically, how do you record if a robot scores more than one tube on a peg that is not an ubertube?
Maybe split each scoring square into two? Other than that, it looks great!
18-02-2011 13:28
jwfossThanks for the positive comments. I am very proud of our team this year. Feel free to use the system as it is, however the code and sheets are currently locked from being modified besides the normal inputs (for use by the scouts).
The difference in the sheets is for ease of the scouts filling them out. In terms of have multiple tubes on a single peg (one of them not being an ubertube) I am under the assumption that this is not likely to happen as only the "outtermost" tube counts for points. <G63> If two GAME PIECES are HANGING from a single SCORING PEG, the outermost GAME PIECE will be counted for scoring purposes. If we see this happening at regionals the code will be modified to monitor that as well.
Thanks again for taking a look at our system, we appreciate the comments!
18-02-2011 13:36
ahollenbachThat's a phenomenal system - it not only looks great, but you definitely will have sound and comprehensive data at the end of qualifications.
Good work!
18-02-2011 13:44
XaulZan11This is impressive.
Have you practiced how long it will take to enter the data after every match? I suspect you will need to have 1 dedicated scout that just enters data as it will take longer than the 3-5 minutes to input everything in between matches. We only input some of the information that we collect into excel, so we can have an extra scout watch matches.
Two suggestions:
I would add a comment section on the printable form. I don't want to think of the information we would have lost if we didn't have a comment section.
Also, perhaps you could make the printable sheet more printer friendly. Not just the colors but the grey will take a lot of ink (and time).
22-02-2011 08:18
jwfossThanks for the suggestions XaulZan11, I agree on the "printability" of the sheets, thanks for catching that. I'm looking into the comment section, however I am interested to see how observant our scouts will be without direct things to look for. The data in the system is currently not very subjective.
On a side note, 80+ downloads and very few comments?

WOW! This looks awesome. Phenomenal work. I will definitely be sharing this and may use it fully, or use it as a template for another scout system. Once again, great work and good luck in the 2011 season.

Quijaswow, This is great thanks for the upload.
lots of teams will appreciate this.
23-02-2011 21:53
Josh FritschAlright...after looking at the latest version (1.3) I noticed just a couple thing
1 )Like Jstack14 mentions below, all teams show that it recieves 1 penalty for every match played on the "Data Analysis" tab, regardless if you said they actually got one or not.
2) Would it be possible to add a box showing the autonomous score percentage (# scores vs. # matches played/attempts) on the "Team Template" tab next to the graphs in a big font?
Also, now that I think about it, I feel like the graphs would be more useful if they were averages, rather than just displaying historical data, or at least a seperate box next to the graphs showing these averages. The historical data can be seen under the graphs at the individual match data. When glancing quickly at the "Team Template" Im looking for quick information, and not so much what happened in each individual match.
3) Also, I could not get the sorting from High to Low, or Low to High working on the "Pick List" or "Data Analysis" tabs, specifically for the average and Qual rank columns
If these things could get fixed/added and reuploaded it would be great!
23-02-2011 22:18
Jstack14Incredible! Maybe i am missing it but is there a way to delete an input? If not that would be a useful feature incase someone inacuratley puts in data and needs to change it.
23-02-2011 22:22
Jstack14another quick change, it is adding 1 penalty for ever match no matter what. Can you edit that?
24-02-2011 08:25
Tim DellesFoss,
This looks pretty nice. Great job. After work I'll take a closer look at it. It reminds me of what I have started and haven't finished... maybe I don't have to finish mine now
24-02-2011 11:19
BX MARKI also noticed that it was adding a penalty point even if there was none. A simple solution was to remove the option of "No" under the penalty drop down box. I made it so my scouters can only select yes. If there are no penalties the box just stays blank.
24-02-2011 13:09
jwfossUpdate 1.4
Corrected Various Programming Issues.
Thanks again for positive comments and suggestions. Sorry we cannot add or change everything suggested but we will strive to fix things are not working correctly.
For those of you currently planning to use our system, please post here as we would love to see the number of teams using it.
Also, if you are going to be at BAE, SBPLI, WPI, or CT I'd love to stop by and talk to you about it.
FRC2168 will be at WPI and CT.

liam.larkinWe think (272) we will be using it. I am currently running it through some simulations. I would really love to get my hands on the source code if I could. There is some mods I would like to develop. I understand if you cant never blame someone for holding onto their intellectual property
24-02-2011 14:06
liam.larkinSomething else I think your system is scoring incorectly???????
<G65> The PEG SCORE is the sum of points determined by the positions of the GAME PIECES on each SCORING GRID. A LOGO PIECES HANGING in front of an UBERTUBE doubles the points for that SCORING PEG.
I have been interpreting this to mean that the ubbertubes are merely doublers and do not in of them selves provide points. Your system seems to be implying that they do. For instance if I but nothing but an ubbertube on the top row your system indicates a score of 6. My understanding is this would be 0 unless another game piece was over the ubbertube. The ubbertube would then double the value and make it worth 6.
Have I been reading this incorrectly the whole time. Im confussing myself now..........

Jstack14Awesome! I am sure any other errors will be discovered by ocmpetition! With the delete feature i have total confidence in this system and its ability to not only be fairly quick, but also acurate. I am going to convince my team to use htis system and i am sure that will be a simple task. Looking great!

Sundance KidJust checked the database out. Seems that you can't clear the "Scout Data input" sheet, so previous teams stuff remains. It would be nice to be able to clear the tube info (just add the option to accept a "blank") especially if someone who is inputting the info makes a mistake.
26-02-2011 14:09
Carter12sWOW WOW WOW!!! This is fantastic! I will be guaranteeing that 3374 will be using this! You did a fantastic job and should be extremely proud. Thank you so much for uploading this you are incredibly generous!
28-02-2011 02:10
Bill_BFantastic start guys. There is much than can be done to improve usability, particularly on the data input page.
1. the view ribbon should be turned off for later excel versions to give more room in the display.
2. change data input page to horizontal layout, most laptop screens are have the wider ratio these days.
3. attributes area should start more neutral values - penalties=yes pretty harsh opening value
4. if there are only two possible values, having a drop-down control to specify them is tedious. use radio buttons for this instance.
5. must be a reset button for sheet so next page of data can be entered. Things will get hectic at the tournament, so making this as easy and foolproof as possible is a top priority.
6.add entry control should be disabled unless data is entered in sheet correctly, e.g. valid team number and reasonable match number at least. This will also prevent double entries if reset of sheet is done as part of add entry process.
7.tube placement logic check should prevent a single robot from multiple ubertube placement. I know it's possible, but so unlikely that it should be excluded from score sheet.
8. robot speed estimate 1,2,3,4,5 1 being lowest? 5 highest? I hope your formulas later do NOT average or do other arithmetic with those "numbers". It is unlikely that one scorer's 3 will mean the same as another's let alone have some sort of linear relation to the other values. Just because they're numbers does not mean you can do meaningful arithmetic with them.
9.printed sheet minibot activity does not have a "did not attempt" option
10. could be possible to make either a by-match or by-team set of printed sheets by input of number of matches or input of team number or numbers. At some point you will know the match and team information for a tournament. if match information is known, it could be a factor in the verification of input data suggested in #6,
Sounds like I don't like it? to the contrary, I would not have spent so much time in analysis of this if I thought it were not possible to improve. Can I convince my team to try it? You're a teen or know about them. What are my chances?
28-02-2011 07:58
donnie99I love this system, this is an awesome way, considering we've been wanting to change over to laptops for socouting after last year,(bad experiences), but our team decided that we should also have a place to put how many tubes they possessed, to see how efficient the robot is at scoring, u don't want a robot that scores %50 and scores 4 tubes, against a more efficient robot
28-02-2011 13:14
jwfossThanks again for all of the comments. Now that competition season is officially here we will only be editing for glitches. I will have to talk to the other developer about providing the passwords to those who truely want them.
New Update 1.5:

- Won't allow entries unless there is a team number and a match number

Carter12sI just had a quick question on compatabillity. I have used the system just fine on a computer running excel 2003, but cannot get it to run at all on excel 2010 the error I get is
This workbook has lost its VBA project, ActiveX controls and any other programmability-related features.
It is not super important, but has anyone found a workaround for this, or do I just need to get some more computers with excel 2003?
Thanks!

RookieWookiezWow, awesome looking scouting sheet! We're having a bit of difficulties here with the scout input data. Everytime we try to add in an entry, we get "Run-time error '1004'" and doesn't add in the data for us. It says its an application or object-defined error. We're not sure if it's our computer that we're using or if there is some sort of error with the coding.
Looks pretty amazing though, we'll be looking forward to using it if we can figure out this error.
Edit: We figured out what it was, it was us.
We would like the password for it though, just in case we might want to add in a category or two more that we think might help us personally.

Regarding the password for the code and the sheets, I'm pretty reluctant to reveal it because of how sloppy/non-intuitive the code is in terms of readability. Maybe if I get around to commenting at some point...?

jwfossJohn, glad to hear you plan to use the system. Care to share a little more information on your ipod interface? Sounds like it could be useful.
On a side note, anyone who used this week one care to share their thoughts and the data entered?
11-03-2011 21:21
BX MARKTeam 1023 didn’t actually compete in week one but our drive team and some of our scouts went up to Kettering. We scouted every match of sat. And imputed it all when we got home, the system worked awesomely! The only difficulty we had was tracking penalties because sometimes the announcer’s don’t say who the penalties are on, thus leading to mass confusion in the stands! I would suggest that teams don’t try to input data in the stands but instead set up a table some where in the building. We found that working with laptops in the stands was a real pain as was getting power to them. We will be using the system at Detroit next week!

Good work, nice interface. I have a minor bug to report. On the Scout Data Input sheet if you build multiple logos on the same rack it doubles the score of all tubes on the same rack not just the same row. For example, one full rack with no Uber tubes is 102 pts.
As a suggestion, I would simply get rid of all logo bonuses. Logo bonuses are a whole alliance thing and this skews the data toward those teams that put up logos on their own, not the ones that work as an alliance to complete logos on separate racks.
24-03-2011 13:36
BX MARKTeam 1023 used this system this past week at Detroit! It was extremely effective and I would recommend it to any team. We will be putting a printer next to our computer during our next competition and will be printing the individual team sheets for our opponents before all of our matches. Thank you so much for making this available to everyone!
24-03-2011 14:42
speedbuggy76We used this scouting system at Peachtree last weekend, and were pretty happy with it. We had 6 people scouting teams, and one person (me) doing data entry. Some comments and questions:
1. The system mostly focuses on offense. Obviously offense is the focus of the game this year, but often the robots available for a second selection won't be used for offense. The addition of some defensive statistics would be nice. Maybe a ranking for how well they keep another robot from scoring or something like that. We had our scouts make comments of defensive ability, but that data isn't entered into the database, so we had to go back to look at the individual sheets.
2. It would be nice if there were a comments section in the database. It would be a lot easier to reference comments related to a team this way. It would be especially nice if, when you select a team to look at, all the comments are displayed alongside the scoring data.
3. Data entry needs to be easier. As someone who entered ~500 scouting sheets, this was the most frustrating thing for me. Fields which aren't numerical values, such as 'Autonomous Starting Position' and 'Defensive/Offensive', are very annoying to input quickly. Having used a drop down list in a browser, I was expecting to be able to type the first letter of the entry and have it automatically fill in the rest of the characters. This wasn't the case (at least in excel 2007). Additionally, I couldn't use the arrows on my keyboard to switch through selections. I was limited to taking my hands off the keyboard to use the trackpad (ugh) to select an option, or just type the whole entry ("Mostly Offensive", "Equal Mix", etc.) in myself. Not sure if there is a way to have excel fill this in for you or not though. Either way, the entry values should be shortened and made more distinct to allow for easier entry. For example, "Mostly Offensive" should be switched to "Offensive" (or even just "O" if auto-fill can't be implemented). In addition to being shorter to type in, if auto-fill can be implemented then you would have to type "Mostly O" before excel would be able to differentiate between "Mostly Offensive" and "Mostly Defensive".
-Minibot graphs. It would be nice if you could somehow relabel the y-axis to show 1st place as the highest value. As-is, the graph is a little hard to read since an empty data point (didn't make it/didn't attempt) is on the bottom, a first place finish is above that, and a 4th place finish is at the top. This could be fixed by transforming the inputted value (making a 1st place finish a 5, a 2nd place finish a 4, etc, and an attempt a 1 to differentiate between attempts and non-attempts).
-denote red cards if possible. Our scouts noted a team that consistently received red cards, and that drastically affected our interest in them. It would be nice if the database accounted for this.
Thanks for the hard work in creating this! We really loved having it at Peachtree, and it was very helpful! If you could please provide the password to modify the file, I would greatly appreciate it. A community effort to make improvements to this great tool would be awesome.
24-03-2011 15:14
jwfossI'm glad to see that those who are using the system like it. We understand that the system is no perfect.
speedbuggy76, our own scouts suggested making the data input easier and there will likely be an update posted to support this before our next regional (CT).
However it is not likely that many other changes we be made as we are quite busy with robot. I will talk to the other developer again about releasing the password, for those of you who already used our system, perhaps we can work something out, shoot me a PM. I honestly never expected this must interest in our system.
Thanks again for your comments, and I hope it continues to serve you well.

speedbuggy76Thanks for the information. Let me know if I can help.
29-03-2011 14:28
avanboekelTeam 2338 used this system last weekend at Midwest. We were pretty happy with it but there are some parts that could see improvement.
1. Comments: they are very important when analyzing the data, yet we can't input them into our scouting database.
2. Data input: at the moment, it is very slow and difficult to use when we have to input almost 500 in one weekend.
3. User mistakes: there is no way to fix errors in data entry. It would be great if there was some way to delete entries with known errors.
4. Minibot data: When a minibot fails to climb the pole, it is in the database as a 0. This is bad when trying to find the best minibots using averages.
Thanks for letting us use your scouting system! We enjoyed using it at our regional. We look forward to using it at nationals.

See ya in St. Louis!
30-03-2011 16:22
avanboekelGreat data input updates! There are still a few things that I think should be changed for later versions...
1) In the data analysis tab, it would be great if we could sort by minibot rank. As is, sorting by minibot average doesn't give us a good idea of how good the minibot actually is. Weighting a 'did not make it' or 'no attempt' as a 5 should make it easier to sort the good minibots from the bad.
2) For data input, it would be faster to type 1, 2, 3, or 4 instead of 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th for the minibot place. It would also be nice to see some sort of change in the input for 'did not make it' and 'no attempt'. Maybe changing them to 'dnf' (did not finish), and 'na'.
Again, thanks for all of the effort put forth towards this scouting program!

jwfossHello all, even though The Aluminum Falcons are not going to Championships we have worked out a special edition of our scouting system.
Championship Edition
- Now Contains selectable team lists from Championships
- Only able to enter real teams in your division
- OPR from Ed Law's System from previous regionals included
- Added some metrics: Manuverability and Minibot Time
- Made some edits to make the overall system better
- Posted a Fully Unprotected Sheet, we suggest not changing anything!
I will personally be in St. Louis and would love to stop by and talk about the system, it would be great if there was at least one team in every division using the system. Please let me know if you are planning to use it, your team number, and the field you are on and I will stop by to talk!
Thanks and good Luck at Championships!

Team 48 will be on Galileo and at the very least usethe scouting sheets and if we can get organized and situated in the arena in time for matches to start on Thursday we may use the database too. This will be a great help not only to me but to our students as well. Thanks!

I highly suggest using the database as well. Its simple to input data, and was a major help with alliance selection. 2338 used AFSS at Midwest, so PM me if you have questions that I can help with.

DrivencrazyHey guys,
First of all, just wanted to say thanks for your hard work. We've been using your system all year and it has been great.
We are planning on using it in the Newton division but the team list is missing team 1732 so we are unable to enter match data for them. Any way to fix that?
Thanks again and good luck.

jwfossUpdated version with the latest team list (4/25/2011) with 88 Teams per field.
Glad to see people plan to use the system, I will do my best to stop by.
Anyone in Curie planning on using it? It looks like we have the other divisions supported. Is there any chance you guys would allow me to have a copy of the data to check out? Thanks.

TEAM1100soft506This is a great program but we at team1100 have just one question. Is it possable for more than one person to add entries from multiple computers at once then have them all end up on the same sheet? Thanks and see you at battlecry12.

You can copy and paste the data from 2 or more excel files into 1 master sheet. It is fairly easy.

jwfossThe system was not designed to have multiple people entering data at one time. However avanboekel is correct that you can copy and paste data into the database page.
Thanks again to all the teams that used the system in St. Louis. It was great to stop by and talk to some of you, I hope it worked well for you.
We learned alot this year from putting this together and though we intend to do something even better next year, we'll see what happens.
