FRC Team 3313 Mechatronics submitted a Woodie Flowers award for our head coach, Mr. Jeremy Bydlon.
Jeremy Bydlon—a mentor worth more than all of the robot parts in the world. Mr. Bydlon is the only mentor for a team of twenty-two students. For three years, he has been dedicated to our FRC Team 3313 Mechatronics and worked to allow us and the team to grow.
Mr. Bydlon has encouraged students in every way he can. He has always said “Robotics isn’t just building a robot, there is so much more to it.” Mr. Bydlon runs the team with this belief. It was that belief that drew many of us to the team and the uniqueness that encircles it. Mr. Bydlon is always accepting of odd ideas. No matter how daft, he’s always willing to try new things. In the preseason, Mr. Bydlon agreed to our crazy idea—the Bydlon Beard Off. This fundraiser allowed students to vote for a style of beard Mr. Bydlon would shave his to. The winner was mutton chops. As promised, he shaved it in front of the entire school.
As a math teacher or a teacher in general, Mr. Bydlon has always worked to improve our understanding in all fields. Although he is not an engineer, he does what he can to ensure we have a clear understanding of everything around us. Because he’s not an engineer, he is able to explain concepts in a ways anyone can understand. He is able to clearly explain a variety of mathematical, scientific, and engineering concepts to us all in practical ways. Not only can he clearly explain all of these concepts to us, but also he is always excited about science and engineering. Many students on and off the team can recall him at one point carrying a box containing robot parts down the hallways of Jefferson almost dancing in his excitement. It is this energy that the entire team runs off of. Without the enthusiasm of Mr. Bydlon, Team 3313 would not be the same.
Since Mr. Bydlon is our only mentor he cannot do everything. So rather than doing everything for us, he guides us in the many tasks we have set. If we run into trouble he is always available to answer questions. All we need to do is ask for help. He encourages us to communicate any problems we may have. It is this system that allows us to be comfortable. He inspires everyone to want to be in our many public events. He ensures all students have the chance to be involved. Mr. Bydlon’s dedication to the team has provided all of us with new chances to learn. Not only does he provide new ways to learn, but also he never wants us working alone. He believes that robotics is a fun group effort and teamwork is a priority.
Ultimately, without Mr. Bydlon, our team would be nonexistent. Many other teams have said “No one mentor is more important than the others…” but on our team we have no other mentors. Mr. Bydlon is the force that keeps our team alive and running. The team wishes we could do as much for him as he has done for us. He has provided a warm and welcoming home for everyone on the team with nothing but encouraging and inspiring words. And that in itself is a noble deed and we are more than thankful for his efforts.
