A comparison of regions by the portion of teams in CMP eliminations.

The Representation index divides the number of teams in CMP eliminations from a specific region by the number of teams it is expected to take. For example, if Region A has 10% of FIRST's population then it is expected to have 10% of the spots in CMP eliminations. If Region A actually has 15% of spots then its representation index is 1.5 (15%/10%). A region with an index above one is more competitive than average and a region with an index less than one is less competitive than average.

The index only measures the most competitive robots from that region. Regions with a really strong top tier that are otherwise less competitive may be overrepresented. Regions with few teams have a very erratic representation index. For example, in 2006 Minnesota had two teams and one made it to CMP elims, giving Minnesota a very large index that year. Florida's index also seems very erratic due to their small number of teams. Additionally, it may be difficult to compare the representation index of a region over a long time span. In 2005 the representation index measured the top 9.7% of teams, compared to 3.8% in 2013.

For 2014 128 teams were selected to go into CMP elims instead of the usual 96. I chose to include those 4th round robots in the calculation. For 2014 this means that 4.7% of teams made it to CMP eliminations. This is comparable to 4.6% in 2011.

The Representation tab shows a breakdown by numbers for a large number of regions. The Chart tab shows some of these regions (including all would make it too cluttered) over time. It's clear that Michigan was always very competitive, but experienced a small jump in competitiveness since the introduction of districts in 2009 and a fall in 2014 with a large number of rookies. Ontario has a rapidly increasing representation index and has surpassed Michigan in the past two years.

Data goes back until 2005 with the introduction of 3v3 matches. Despite 3 team alliances being present in CMP elims for years before that I did not include those results because separating the MAR teams from the western PA teams was a really big pain to do by hand and I didn't want to do it for even more years.
